A Lewis Cass Presidency?

Sounds worrisome to me: http://www.nndb.com/people/224/000050074/

54-40 or fight as an actual policy would be suicide, and even just being the kind of guy to vote for that on principle isn't exactly encouraging.

Taken from link:
"he was a member of the United States Senate, and in 1846 was a leader of those demanding the "re-annexation" of all the Oregon country south of 54 degrees 40 minutes or war with England, and was one of the fourteen who voted against the ratification of the compromise with England at the 49th parallel"

Wow. What an arse.
War with Great Britain, no problem. Seems to be one every 20-30 years. For this TL anyway.
