A leak before the Purge

During the Purges, Stalin ordered the execution of 5 Marshals of the Soviet Union. He separated them from there normal army units, arrested them, and withheld all information of what was happening until they were already dead. What if all 5 of these Generals found out ahead of time(some pod). Whats the fullest extent of what they couldve done compared with what they wouldve done.

I'm not really up on the situation for Stalin &co , but I would think that if the Marshall's got wind of what was coming down they may have attempted a counter stroke against Stalin. What if anything they might have been able to accomplish is an unknown from my seat.

However if they had been able to turn the tables it would have made for some very interesting changes in not only the Eastern Front, but in the relations with the Germans in the time leading up to Barbarossa, particularly if the Marshall's and their allies found out just where the seed for the idea for the purges originated from.

I wonder if one at least could have fled USSR, maybe a less checked frontier...

Like past Turkestan/modern -stans, into Iran?
