A Larger China

At what point in its history pre-1900, could Imperial China successfully invade the Japanese islands and incorporate them in the Chinese Empire.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I belive the Emperor of China was considered to be the ruler of the entire world, including Japan.

Alternatively, I could be imagining that completely. I am very sleep deprived.

Incorporating is harder, I think. They've got a different culture and language (though we might see Japanese switch completely to Kanji, or just use Chinese characters) but it's also lacking a land border. When there's a revolution, it's a lot easier to send an army than a navy and an army of marines.

Invade, probably, the Mongols were screwed over by bad luck. But a determined succession of Emperors can do it.

Hold? That's another matter altogether, probably not.
