A Jordan without the West Bank

The gaining of the West Bank by Jordan after 1948 had quite an effect upon the country. Not only did it produce a situation where Jordanians and Palestinians frequently quarreled, but it also hurt relations between Jordan and other Arab states. On the upside it seems that the West Bank also improved Jordan's economy a fair bit.

What would happen if Jordan let go of the West Bank in the 50's or, alternatively, if Jordan never had the West Bank to begin with?

Controlling the West Bank also had important propaganda value for the legitimacy of Hashemite rule there.

That depends. What do you propose happens to the West Bank if it is not annexed to Jordan?

Re-gained the West Bank; the Protectorate of Trans-Jordan originally incorporated the territories on both sides of the Jordan River, hence the name ‘West Bank’.

For this to not take place you would have to have a very good reason for King Abdullah I to not resume sovereignty of his former subjects and, far more importantly, resume his sacred duty as guardian of the holy places of Jerusalem. It would have to be a very good reason for that to occur.

Jordan’s difficulty with other Arab States seems to stem from their willingness to compromise with Israel, not the sovereignty of the West Bank.
