A Japanese Me-109

Hi everyone,

In my first post here, I share the link below that provides a rare photo of a Me-109 used by Japan, with the mark of the Rising Sun emblazoned on the fuselage. Does anyone know if Japan used German fighters in combat? The link also features a selection of photos unimaginable for the High Command of the Luftwaffe at the beginning of WW2, see their powerful Me-109 and Fw-190 fighters captured and tested with allied markings. To view all photos, visit the link below:

Cheers, Stephan.

I'm quite sure that no German fighters were used operationally by Japan, but the Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien was very similar to the Bf 109 and used the same license-built engine.

I don't think Militarist Japan used any Nazi aircraft directly, but as already mentioned, they did use the engine for the Ki-61. The early models also used German cannons, shipped to Japan. A FW-190 was shipped to Japan, which helped serve as the inspiration for the Ki-100, which similarly used a large radial engine mated to a skinny frame. Amazingly, an already bombed-out Japan also somehow managed to construct and test-fly the Ki-201 jet aircraft using only blueprints and a single photo of the Me-262. Of course, it never saw combat, but I have read that it was quite a shock for Allied intelligence when they saw the telltale runway marks and realized that Militarist Japan was experimenting with jets.

Interestingly, a few P-40s captured in Burma were operated by Japan for a short while.
