A humble request for help with AN alternate civil war

I am attempting to write an alternate of the AMerican war between the states that would be analougouse to AMerica's war in Vietnam.

To whit,

A world Superpower becomes involved in a civil war between a popular northern faction and an unpular and corrupt southern faction.

The war proves to be long and very costly in both money and lives for the superpower, and becomes very unpopular at home, despite the fact that the SUperpower's forces are technically winning all of its battles.

The superpower is winning the battles, but losing the political war, and after a few years, a Prime Minister has already lost his job.

Et Centera.

How do I accomplish this in a somewhat realistic manner?

Trent Affair leads to Union-UK war?

Seeing as much of the British public was fairly pro-union, i think a Vietnam analogue is on the cards.

OK< I can see that, but I want to do this at least sorta-kinda-plausably, so it at least sounds kinda believable.

So after Trent, what does the UK do?

Things I need for my Vietnam Analouge:

These are the things I need to be the case in my alternate American War between the States.

1) I need the British Empire to send advisors and financial backers to the DSA prewar.

2) I need SOME kind of international reason for why the British army never sends it's army i na body to invade the Union states, the bulk of the war HAS to stay in the Confederacy.

Shelling of some Union port cities is allowable, (Analogouse to the U.S. bombing of North Vietnam).

I need the CS Army to be a lackluster ally at best i nthe face of British aid.

I need support of the pro slavery Jefferson administration to be unconditional on the excuse of "giving what for to those uppity frenchie loving yanks."

I need a union offensive that the British crush, but that is nonetheless percieved by the British public, as a defeat of their forces, causing them to regard the North AMerican war as "Unwinnable."

Can you help me?

I think your proposed TL might work better if you substituted France for Britain. Perhaps, after invading Mexico in 1863, Louis Napoleon starts aiding the CSA to prevent the Union from helping the Mexican government.

Because of Mexico, its colonial commitments, and the growing threat of Prussia, France couldn't send troops and thus would have been limited to arms shipments and similar forms of assistance.

UK could be a secret supporter of the US, analogous to Communist support for North Vietnam.

Me likey this idea. :D
OOOOOHHHH Yeah, that Good!

France, sends troops and money and so forth to help the CSA and Britian sends advisors and money and ships to the Union in an "Anti-France" effort.

I think that gives me everything I really wanted.

Also it provides a fantastic flavor of irony considering the history of the Vietnam war in our TL.

SUPER YAY!

France loses troops and money giving unconditional aid to the Davis regime, year after year and the CSA army behaves much the way the ARVN did toward theirFrench allies.

Is it wierd that I just pictured a lady of the Evening in wartime Atlanta telling a French Soldier in heavily accented french,

"I'll love you for a long time, Sugar."
