A Humble Nintendo: What if Donkey Kong Failed?

With the unexpected team up of Nintendo and Sega, Sony and Microsoft had decided to enter an unsettled alliance. Microsoft would provide Sony with some good developers that it had just acquired and Sony would ensure the games were made up to standard for both of them. Most notable of said developers was Rareware that Nintendo had sold to Microsoft. Having them work with Sony and Microsoft’s financial backing should result in some good titles being released. Sega may have gotten the works of Enix under their umbrella and Tecmo to work with Nintendo, but Koei’s Dynasty Warriors and Konami’s Metal Gear Solid proved to be a hit with players that would benefit both Microsoft and Sony’s catalogs.

With Sony’s brand name and Microsoft’s know how of Hardware and internet made them a tremendous duo to combat any given console.
The two would make a console that appealed to Western markets and try to force Sega and Nintendo out of the console market.

Butterfly Effects: Newcomer Microsoft and their XBox will be helping Sony and their PlayStation make a new console that combines the best of both consoles. With the likes of Konami and Koei making titles exclusively for them the future console wars will get even more heated.

Next Time: We learn what manufacturing differences appear in Nintendo and Sega’s next consoles due to the Triforce engine.
Cool!

Nice! Also, can we name TTL's PS2 the PlayStation X? I know that was the codename of the PS1, but still, that name sounds cool!

Nintendo and Sega The Big Partnership
With Sega's knack for pushing hardware and Nintendo for innovation in gaming both would change the landscape of video gaming forever.

The Nintendo Wii is equipped with 512MB of RAM, Intel PowerPC processor, ATI "Hollywood" graphics card, 802.11 b/g wireless connection and WiiConnect 24 persistant connection that has run back netcode.

The Sega Dream Cast 2 has improved online and wireless connection alongside Intel PowerPC processor and graphics card.

Not only that but Nintendo would acquire the likes of Tecmo to show off the console capabilities of the Nintendo Wii. Itagaki was ready to quit Tecmo until Satoru Iwata stepped in and decided to acquire his company from the likes of Bandai whom never reached the initial sales their original merger had hoped. Without a game developing company and no other options Bandai would merge with Sony to fight off other hostile take overs.

Sega would also acquire Enix and its subsidiaries' Level-5 and MistWalker alongside the rights to animated shows.

Butterfly Effects: We see how Nintendo increased the power slightly of the Nintendo Wii and Sega with their HD console. With Sega's help Nintendo was able to attract more developers to the Nintendo Wii console and was guaranteed an acquisition of Tecmo.

Next Time: We learn how Sony and Microsoft plan to merge their video gaming sides of companies.

The Unlikely Duo
With Nintendo and Sega partnership showing strong headwinds Sony and Microsoft knew they must act fast. The PlayStation Brand was staggering behind due to Nintendo's disc based Nintendo 64 system. Microsoft had yet to make huge headways into the video game console business so a compromise was reached. Sony Computer Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft Studios would merge to become Interactive Studios X and their console would now be called the PlayStation X codenamed the PSX.

The controller would merge the hardware capabilities of the XBox and the controller design of the PlayStation 2. Bandai would help in licensing games that appealed to Asian countries due to Nintendo owning SquareSoft and Monolithsoft and Sega owning Enix and its subsidiaries. Sega was another matter entirely. One would expect Sega to go under due to mismanagement but the owner of Sega had turned the ship around with impressive results.

Not only would Sega be an issue, but no more gaming developers wanted to be bought due to the FTC breathing down everybody's neck. Capcom Namco would be out of the picture.

Not all was lost as Koei Konami and Rare provided titles that proved popular alongside the gaming crowd. Titles such as Dynasty Warriors, Metal Gear Solid, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, Bomberman, Banjo and Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Conker's Bad Fur Day all proved to be popular in some force or another.

What Sony and Microsoft needed was a RPG juggernaut that could put them back on the map. Maybe Falcolm with its Ys series would help and Namco with its Tales of would provide the needed titles to garner customer support back. One could only hope that the Nintendo Wii and Sega Dream Cast 2 would prove not to be that popular.

Screw that............

I'm getting'em ALL!

Humble Nintendo's Wii
After the announcement of PlayStation X Nintendo knew it was time to release their big projects.

First to show off the capabilities of the Nintendo Wii was a certain title:

Dead or Alive 4 Wii.png

Gameplay provided by World of Longplays:

Included in the fighting game Dead or Alive 4 was Final Fantasy's beauty Tifa Lockhart whom was unlocked from the very start. The Nintendo Wii's power was nothing to scoff at. With Sega's help the graphics and engine of the Nintendo Wii was a serious contender in the realm of fighting games.

Final Fantasy 12 was another title and did it show off further what the game was capable of:

With stunning graphics and fast actioned gameplay the Nintendo Wii was showing leaps and bounds of what power gamer's thought it originally had. Not only were the motion controls spectacular but the Wii Pro Controller came with the system to ensure heavy arcade fighting gameplay stood the test of time.

Nintendo also announced Smash Brothers whose roster looked like this:

Brawl Roster Humble Nintendo.png

Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden and Kasumi from Dead or Alive was added to the roster.

Sega's Dream Cast 2 also had a great title releasing for it.

LmpwZw

With Nintendo's promise, Sega was able to acquire Enix and its Subsidiaries Level-5 and MistWalker. Unlike the original title IOTL two extra characters were added as playable in the game for its original release. Dragon Quest 8 was a title nobody had ever dreamed of and showed that Sega was a serious contender in Japanese markets.

Things were looking up for Nintendo and Sega at the start of their new console launch.

Microsoft and Sony were wondering just how they could counteract this partnership in the long run as neither had big success in the console department.

Butterfly Effects: Nintendo's Wii is more arcade powerful than IOTL and Sega has the hugest Dragon Quest title available for their system.

Next Time: We learn exactly what titles Sony and Microsoft plan to bring to the market to fight off the aggression of Nintendo and Sega.

PlayStation X: An Unlikely Duo
With the Partnership of Nintendo and Sega making big waves in the gaming industry, Sony and Microsoft needed some big games to bring to the competition. Sony would focus on the portable side of the gaming business with Bomberman and spin offs of Banjo and Kazooie; whereas, Microsoft would focus on money hatting developers to make games for the PlayStation X. Nihon Falcom provided its Ys Seven for an action RPG for the PSP:

Koei with its Dynasty Warriors 6 game would provide gameplay for the PlayStation X on home console releases alongside the Tales of Vesperia gameplay.

gameplay provided by Turt

Bungie's Legendary Halo 3 was also being released for the PSX.

PSX would also get Conker's Other Bad Fur Day, Goemon's Great Adventure 2, Perfect Dark 2 and Jet Force Gemini 2 as bonus titles alongside Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. More titles were underway from Rare being kept heavily under wraps. As of now the uneasy alliance was seemingly paying off.

Sony Interactive Entertainment would also request the title of one more game to be released that would involve all of Sony and Microsoft's Properties. Lastly, Sony would acquire Nihon Falcom and Konami whereas Microsoft would acquire Koei.

Butterfly Effects: Sony and Microsoft are getting used to be partners and are acquiring more developers to fight off Nintendo and Sega's partnership.

Next Time: We see what Nintendo's big plans for the Wii Console are.

Enter Raymond Bryce. A retired military officer whom becomes a part of the Emergency Rescue Team. The game center arounds a terrorist organization known as Surge setting off disasters in cities and country sides. It is up to Raymond Bryce to save everyone caught in the chaos and to hold Surge accountable for its crimes.

Another title was also making headlines amongst gaming news sites:

Kingdom Hearts 2 Wii.png

Developer: SquareSoft
Publisher Nintendo

Kingdom Hearts 2 was a phenomenal game that expanded upon Chain of Memories for the Game Boy advance and also included a new character named Roxas.
It dealt with new threats called the Nobodies who fought against the heartless and starred Donald and Goofy's King in the same type of hood that the enemy organization had.
Unlike OTL the game included a playable Riku side story that followed how he ended up in the world that never was.

Nintendo would also get a game that furthershowed off the online capabilities of the Wii:

cGc

Developed by Capcom
Published by Capcom

Thanks to Nintendo's connections with Sega they got a hold of Taito to develop the "Taito Engine" a program that allowed arcade like fighting games to run on consoles like the Wii. Games like Street Fighter Alpha 3 were also released for the console.

Butterfly Effects: Capcom is beginning to see promise in Nintendo's console the Wii and wants to develop more titles for it. Online Capabilities for the Nintendo Wii are even better than OTL.

Next Time: We learn of the game that Sony and Microsoft are making that includes all of their properties together.

Sony and Microsoft: Making a Fighter
Nintendo and Sega are doing well for themselves; especially, with Nintendo's Super Smash Brothers series. Sony and Microsoft felt they needed to pull their resources together to create a system seller that included both of their properties fighting each other to determine who is the best.

The Roster was as follows:

Sony vs Microsoft Roster.png

On the Microsoft side was Master Chief from Halo. Marcus Fenix from Gears of War. Shu from Blue Dragon. Jack of Blades from Fable. Blinx from Blinx the time cat. Alan Wake from Alan Wake. Rash from Battletoads and a couple of characters from Killer Instinct

Official Tier lists came as the following:

Top Tier: Kratos, Master Chief, Marcus Fenix, Jack of Blades, Jago
A Tier: Jak & Daxter, Zeus, Colonel Radec, Raiden, Fulgore, Joanna Dark
B Tier: Sly Cooper, Nathan Drake, Alan Wake, Shu, Marcus Fenix, Banjo & Kazooie, TJ Combo, Rash
C Tier: Nariko, Sackboy, Sir Daniel, Kat, Spike, Emmett, Conker, Juno
D Tier: Parappa, Fat Princess, Sweet Tooth, Sly Cooper, Toko Inque, Zeus, Blinx

The game was released in 2009 and despite the well made cast it was seen as a knockoff of Nintendo's Super Smash Brothers series. Gamers did not see this game as a fighter to determine who was the best under both companies' names but a lazy put together knockoff that was chasing clout of Nintendo's success.

Next Time: We see what Sega's big plans are for the next generation of consoles.

Sega's Dream Cast 2
It was Sega's turn to show off what they were making.

video provided by IGN

Virtua Fighter 5 was fully capable of showing off what console power Sega had. Despite the gameplay shown from the PlayStation X gamers were more wowed by the look and playability of the Sega console.

The other title to wow gamers was Sonic 2006 which still had Yuji Naka's involvement on the project. With no bugs this time.

A certain unknown series was included in the type of games that Sega was releasing:

gameplay provided MK

The Yakuza series was hitting new types of popularity not seen before and the gameplay wowed gamers. It had come far from games like Shenmue.

gameplay provided by IGN

A remake of The House of the Dead was made by newcomer to the Sega family, Forever Entertainment, which got formed earlier than OTL to remake Sega games.

Things were looking up for Sega and their brand. Who knew that not releasing disc add-ons would lead to such a triumph in video gaming?

Butterfly Effects: Sega's on a roll with big games coming out for their new console and are pulling ahead in the console wars due to their advanced hardware and spectacular games.

Next Time: We see who third parties pick in their endeavors to keep up in the console race between Nintendo, Sega and Sony/Microsoft.

Third Parties make their Decision
With the Console wars down to Nintendo, Sega and Sony/Microsoft third party game developers were stuck in a pickle in whom to support.

Capcom supported everyone and Konami was reduced to making Pachinko machines for the head honcho.

Below is a table of whom supports which companies and why:

S.N.K.SNK supports Nintendo due to easy to program consoles SNK decides to work with the Big N.
NamcoNamco works with Sony/Microsoft to combat their rival Sega and Nintendo's console is not powerful enough to run their desired games.
Nihon FalcomNihon Falcom supports working with Sony/Microsoft due to Nintendo already owning Square Soft and Sega owning Enix .
Electronic ArtsDespite them being a Western studio and past grudges with Sega, EA decides to partner with the house of the Hedgehog to make sports games.
BethesdaBethesda picks Sony/Microsoft for wanting to tap into the PlayStation X's American market.
UbisoftUbisoft is split between the three companies with the more child friendly franchises going to Nintendo; whereas, all the other franchises goes to Sega and Sony/Microsoft.
ActivisionActivision decides to work with Sega whose console is using cutting edge technology and has a more mature audience for Call of Duty games.

The rest of the industry was even split on which console manufacturer they supported. Most of sports titles supported Sega and Midway Games until the latter went defunct.

Next Time: We learn what Chinese Developer Tencent brings to the table to fight off the warring console market that plans to cross over into the Chinese Market.

From East Asia
Tencent was a conglomerate in Mainland China that had its fingers in multiple pies: Video Games and Entertainment. Not wanting to be left behind Tencent would invest, ahem acquire some studios, these studios including:

  • Activision Blizzard
  • Epic Games
  • Unreal
  • Riot Games
Tencent wanted a series to make PC Gaming more intriguing to its business strategy of dominating the PC Market. These games would include World of Warcraft, Warcraft, Star Craft for the Korean Market, and Riot Games for the American Market.

Creating its own application named Wechat which is used by 1 billion users. And wanting to buy more developers down the line, Tencent would prove to be a top contender in video games at making money.

League of Legends would appear on the PlayStation X as a simple title; whereas, the main title for the PC would be a meatier title with more options and DLC.

Another title would be upcoming hit Fortnite which would be a hit amongst younger players.

Microsoft would retreat from the gaming console industry and instead focus on the PC Market against Tencent.

A Tale of Two Rivals
Nintendo and Sega had another worry in Tencent. Even though they didn't have any games that were developed by Tencent or its subsidiaries the mere presence of the gaming company sent shivers down the gaming industry. What if Tencent got interested in the console business? What if indeed. Nothing would be stopping a huge company like Tencent and with Microsoft out of the picture of consoles it would bring utter mayhem to gaming as a whole.

Sega knew it had gotten by with its smart decision to follow Nintendo with no disc add-ons for its consoles. Following Nintendo had proven to be a smart idea, but one question remained for Sega. Whom should it acquire next? Nintendo's acquisitions of Squaresoft and Tecmo was proven to keep the Federal Trade Commission board on them. The company would have to fit Sega's vision and culture of video games. Sega would look inwards to decide which game company would fit its image brand.

Nintendo had to be careful to keep the FTC off its back. The Big N would be allowed one more company to acquire before being subjected to scrutiny by trust developers. Maybe just maybe there would be another developer that Nintendo could acquire in the grand scheme of things but as of yet nothing could be done.

Things were different now. Once bitter rival, Sega, was now a big asset in warding enemies off the video game market. Would things be the same once Sony was gone from the video game market? Only time would tell. But one things was for certain, Sega was serious about the video game industry and had no plans of shuttering its doors.

The industry needed a shake up and the likes of Nintendo and Sega holding it in succession together would fall under anti-trust laws.

Butterfly Effect: Microsoft has dropped from the Console business altogether and Sony doesn't seem that far behind; however, the Anti-Trust Laws and FTC will ensure that Nintendo and Sega's alliance is broken up.

Next Time: We see what is in store for the two rivals in E3 2009.

A Tale of Two Rivals E3 2009
The announcement came as a shock at E3. Once Nintendo and Sega were done with their presentations another surprise announcement took place. Nintendo and Sega were to continue their rivalry or both be held under scrutiny under the Federal Trade Commission in Video Games. Working together had created a quasi monopoly to take place forcing both Sony and Microsoft out of the console market. Regulators would look towards Tencent and others whom wished to join the console race to enter and compete.

Nintendo and Sega thought this decision was blasphemous but once the dust settled knew they did not have much choice than to be rivals again. It was better than losing a majority of the studios you had acquired.

As for now Sega and Nintendo could not acquire anymore development teams nor consolidate third parties into their ranks. Their success would need to be based off their current developers on hand and nothing more.

Nintendo and Sega were back at it in the ring against each other and would need to bring everything they got to get the best of each other.
