Note: this thread could also be in "before 1900" and possibly even in the "future history" section.
There have been a few times in history where specific groups have been given, or conquered, places that they consider specific homelands. The most famous example, of course, is the Israel/Palestine area, which most recently was allocated as a Jewish country. Another example is Liberia, which was supposed to be a new homeland for freed United States slaves.
Can you think of any other possible homelands that might have been, or might be, created? Things to consider:
-The need for a homeland
-The desire for one
-The ability to create or conquer one
-The ability to sustain one
-Where would it be?
Some suggestions off the top of my head, with commentary:
-Gay homeland: This may be the most unusual example due to the ability to sustain, that is, the reproductive challenges. In addition, any children born would most likely not be like their parents. Therefore, if any were created, I don't think many people would live there. At most, I'm thinking no more than a million (some sort of medium-sized city-state), and that's optimistic. Another big issue here is not so much a need for a homeland, but a desire for one, also.
-Evangelical Christian homeland: I've read that there is a movement among some evangelical Christians to move to specific states to increase its numbers, and therefore voting, power. I don't see many people doing this in the near future (so far, the numbers are at most a few thousand). However, Utah is an example of a state that was founded as a religiously-oriented state, so I guess one could go there as an example of what that would be like.
I'll post more if I can think of good examples.
