A Hermann Goering Germany?

welcome to the board,

We have had a number of threads where we speculated who could succeed Hitler, and indeed in a number of scenario's Goering is the likely person to take over Germany; however beyond some semi deep speculation as to how Goering would come into power and the sorts of people he would need to eliminate to maintain a grip on power; there hasn't been much discussion on how he would actually govern; other than saying that he would be a lot less reckless than Hitler himself

there aren't any developed TL's on the subject that I have seen... IMO nobody tries it because it would be boring (ie Goering would consolidate what Germany had and likely not start WW2 as we know it, leaving Germany in a position a la Franco's Spain or pre -40 Italy

Would the Holocaust still happen under Goering - Would Germany's Jews still be murdered even without the War?

No. While he was Antisemitic, he was never that far gone. Think of him as a Moderate in that regard; in favor of resettlement elsewhere and the laws, but not their elimination as a people.

Probably not, deportation and or horrendous forced labor are still certainly possible

As administrator for the German 4/5 year economic plans he was absolutely against the wanton murder of people as done by the einsatzgruppen (if only because he wanted to use them for slave labor)

I assume that if Hitler died before World War II Hess would take over. If Goering assumes power that means that Hitler lasted until after Hess left for Britain.

Oh, I think Hitler had laid all the necessary groundwork by 1923; have him caught with a brick to the head in the ensuing scuffles, and Fat Hermann picks up the reins of the Nazi Party without a hitch. Heck, Hindenberg would probably be a lot more comfortable naming him Chancellor etc. Hitler makes a much better martyr for the cause than he does an actual leader.

The possibility of WWII under Goering is an interesting one. He's more aware of the dangers of engaging Britain, but lots of people were spoiling for a rematch or militaristic types wouldn't have won the elections. He'll try to figure out how to get into a war with Stalin without involving Britain.

How would he handle Rohm?

I think the idea that there would be no Holocaust is wishful thinking. Working slaves to death over the course of 5 or 10 years is just as final as the ovens, and likely to be just as thorough. More so, because Goering might actually win, or wait to start a war until it was finished.
