What would be the most likely (and useful) location for a hereditary Duchy that could ensure election of a dynasty and how would this alter the country’s growth? Would this lead to more dynastic struggles or a more stable Commonwealth? The POD should be after the Union of Lublin as before then the hereditary Jagiellon kings of Lithuania were mostly guaranteed to be elected.

I’m thinking that either Mazovia or Prussia is most likely as one is centrally located within Poland and the the Prussian lands were desired by Polish kings for centuries. Maybe a more successful Great Northern War for the Poland-Russian-Danish alliance could allow for a hereditary Wettin state in Livonia.

If POD is after Union of Lublin, then Mazovia is impossible, it was incorporated to the Crown in 1526. Mazovia as hereditary duchy for Polish kings require longer life of either Janusz III or Stanisław of Mazovia, so 1524 or 1526 POD. Prussia is doable with later POD. If Albert of Prussia has healthly son (he had two who died as infants and one menthally ill), then as great-grandson of Casimir IV, that son could get PLC's throne if changing religion is not big problem for him. Upper Silesia-that would happen, if Polish Vasa line continue, Vasas already ruled in Duchy of Opole during 1646-1666 period. Of these options Prussia is IMHO the best, followed by Mazovia (if King of Poland is hereditary Duke of Prussia, then no one else is). Livonia and Moldavia were not that valuable.

Would Prussia be a viable support base for royal power in the PLC? I imagine the fear of losing the Prussian lands would be enough to essentially ensure the election of Albert of Prussia’s descendents assuming he or his son gets the throne.

Even without hereditary duchy 3 Vasas in row were elected, and if not the fact, that Vasa line died out, it would continue. Hohenzollerns, having not only Jagiellon blood but also hereditary duchy in Prussia, would be in much better position. Also, they would omit problems faced by OTL Kings (King of PLC had no right to choose one of sons as successor and could not give any land to them, with either Hohenzollerns or Mazovian Piasts on the throne, that would not be problem-they would have hereditary land inside PLC already) that means also, that kings would also face less problems with finding wifes for their sons.
