A Hamlin Presidency?

The republicans mad a ticket led by Abraham Lincoln, and For democrat Hannibal Hamlin. My question is, if Abraham Lincoln was killed before his inauguration, or died early in his term, what would a hamlin Presidency look like? Would there be more or less need for secession and, if the south did Secede as in OTL, would they have a better chance at Winning the civil war than in OTL?
(I just want to say I'm not a strong confederate, just asking for a book I'm thinking about writing)

I personally imagine the North would win, but Kentucky and Missouri would likely be Confederate as Hamlin would likely be more openly anti- slavery early. The South still would have little chance, but it could drag it out a bit longer as a result. A negotiated peace is extremely unlikely for obvious reasons, and the closest thing that is possible to it is a ceasefire, especially if a pro-South President wins in 1864.

What about a later start for a Hamlin Presidency -- like if Lincoln had died at Fort Stevens, or even after his re-election but before the Electoral College? Such as that Hamlin serves Lincoln's second term instead of Andrew Johnson?

They wouldn't be militarily occupying the south like in Turtledove's story Must And Shall. They didn't have such severe reprisals after Lincoln and several members of his cabinet were the targets of a coordinated assassination plot, so they wouldn't if Lincoln were to be shot as a target of opportunity at Fort Stevens.

Looked up that story; yeah, that's just not plausible on any level. (I'm starting to think it should go without saying that Turtledove's answers to a PoD should be dismissed out f hand.)

Turtledove's novels, while interesting reads are definitely not very plausible alternate history. Frankly, only Stirling is worse in the plausibility department. The entire TL-191 Saga is incredibly implausible.
