A Gunpowder Rome

I do love the idea of a stagnant Roman Empire.

Faeelin,

I don't, because it's a false and limited view.

Knee-jerking muskets, field artillery, and corned powder into the Roman military technology is just a false and limited to view too.

I'd go on, but it's clear they would never manage anything of import.

Are they going to magically develop muskets and all attendant technology without facing a gunpowder-using enemy? Are they going to magically use gunpowder in the same manner and methods the OTL's Europe did? China in the OTL innovated too, but it didn't develop like Europe because China didn't have the same needs.

Rome did innovate and did develop technologies where and when there was a need for it. It's an old saying, but necessity actually is the mother it is claimed to be.

Militarily, Rome was stagnant for centuries because there was no necessity to innovate or improve. Giving Rome gunpowder doesn't automatically trigger the military innovations that followed in the OTL. The abilities the Roman logistic system doesn't provide an impetus for innovation either.

Since it took Europe a few centuries before the old medieval way of fighting was obsolete by the firearm, by the time they were in full use, the turbulent times of civil war in the late Empire would have meant they would have used the firearms against each other.

And by that time, everyone with knowledge of Rome would be using firearms. Except the Huns, but won't they be surprised.

Without the Huns to push the Germans into a weakened Roman Empire, there'd be no Dark Ages. So, all of Europe would be different.

This is based off of a game called Flavius.
