The Germans tried to solve the long range escort fighter requirement with the twin engined Bf110, that proved lethal against PZL fighters over Poland and a failure Vs Sprifires. The Japanese had the A6M that had the range to escort bombers all the way to Scotland if required and could dogfight with Spitfires and decimate Hurricanes. Could the Germans have built a better Zero type fighter, and what impact would that have on Battle of Britain scenarios?
And what would a German Zero look like?
Another possibility would have been to turn the Heinkel He100 into a longer ranged fighter, sort of a 1939 Mustang, with a bigger wing and extra tanks...
With no Bf110 being built, the manufacturing capability was there.
