A French intervention in Mexico WI

at the beginning of the French intervention in Mexico both Britain & Spain supported France & sent their fleets to Veracruz with France. But when Mexico invaded they pulled out. My question is what if they sent troops to & fully supported France? Woulf the coalyion defeat Mexico or would the war have the same end just with more casualties along the way?

They did sent troops. However, the scheme came down when the Spanish and the British noted that the French had cross-purposes in Mexico. Anyway, if it comes through, I imagine that the intervention will be unpopular in their respective countries, Juárez will be toppled, and the U.S. will be even more pissed, and very likely to intervene once it gets done with the Civil War.

The Brits and Spanish only wanted their debts paid, the French wanted a puppet government, when the Mexicans paid the Brits and the Spanish they get out of there asap ... which was the only logical option.

No way sort of an ASB ...

IIRC, the United States was originally offered a role in the expedition, but Lincoln declined for obvious domestic reasons.

The problem is that no victorious Union will tolerate a European vassal on both borders. A CS-victory scenario might see the possibility of the French sticking around longer.

To be fair, the French expeditionary forces could very well have beaten what the Union sends down to Mexico, but in the long-run the Americans and Mexican anti-monarchists will more than likely win.

You will need to butterfly away the Franco-Prussian War to have the French stay for longer

Considering the incredibly dumb way that war came to be that should be quite easy.

Isabella II entertained the idea of making one of her daughters either queen or consort queen of Mexico. Give her that and she will press Spain to remain there. Of course, why would Napoleon III do that, is an entirely different story...

Assuming a longer Mexican Expedition doesn't butterfly away the Franco-Prussian War completely.

It'd make more sense than it did IOTL; Nappy spends his whole career trying to wreck the Habsburg and then just gives one of their princelings the Mexican throne.

I don't think it would. A longer Mexican Expedition would zap more of France's strength which would only entice Prussia to take advantage of it.

Because Bismarck needed to lead a coalition of German states into war, he was required to "trick" France into declaring war first.

A weaker France would be less likely to rise to Bismarck's bait over the Ems telegram and a weaker France would be less likely to object as strongly as it did over the Spanish issue.

Becoming Monarch of Mexico in and of itself wasn't much of a gift.

I mean if countries were cars it was like getting a really badly beat up sedan that wanted to kill you...

Is it better than not having a country, sure, but you're going to have to put a lot of effort into getting that thing running again the way it should.
