A Fire In Finland

If the authorities had known that Johann Schultz had lost a two friends and a cousin to the Gestapo, they would not have let him near the plane. But here he was, a mechanic on an FW Condor. He noticed that the landing gear was defective, and the wheels could catch fire the next time it landed. Instead of reporting the defect, he sprayed a fire accelerant above the wheel. One other person could have reported the defect, but he too passed on it. When the plane landed at Imatra, the wheel caught fire, and the fire spread toward the gas tank. Bruno Nyberg, a
Finnish mechanic rushed in with a fire extinguisher, but it was too little and too late. Hitler barely got out alive He was disfigured, and his throat was burned. He was sent into a coma, and when he awoke, he would never be able to speak normally again
Since Hitler had nominated him as successor, Herman Goering became acting Fuehrer. Knowing that Himmler and Goebbels would challenge him he took steps to consolidate his position. He pulled a division of troops from occupation duty in France and sent them to Berlin. When Hitler came to, the important buildings were guarded by troops loyal to Goering. Not being able to speak again, Hitler decided to retire as fuehrer and confirmed Goering as successor.

"he would never be able to speak normally again"

Did Hitler ever speak normally XD?

Good starting altough I am bit unsure would Hitler just retire despite that he is unable do his job.

But there will be surely ugly fight about power.

The FW Condor landed at Imatra on June 4th 1942.
While going through Hitler's papers, Goering found a draft of the speech Hitler was going to give in Finland. It didn't look very good.
The Italians were losing in Africa, the Germans had been pushed back from Moscow, and the Rzhev salient was in danger. Goering realized that it would be almost impossible to win against Russia, Britain and the US. He thought that he might have one year to get an acceptable peace from Britain or Russia before the USA demanded unconditional surrender.
He contacted Canaris and asked him about what kind of proposals Britain would accept.
"Hitler's proposals were never realistic. Britain would never accept the situation on the ground in June 1940. Britain will demand the unoccupation of France, withdrawal from the low countries, and the restoration of Poland.
Goering decided to make steps in that direction. He had already pulled troops from France to guard Berlin. He decided withdraw the occupation troops from Paris to the Oise. The Vichy government could move back to Paris if it wanted to. He also gave more leeway to the government. They were no longer asked to send the Jews east.

This may sound ASB, but this is a near death experience.

When they were doing the tracheotomy, I stopped breathing for two minutes. Then I saw a rider on a green horse. “You are riding a horse from Revelation, but you look like a valkyrie.”

Yes,I am Waltraut . And the horse is green because your policies will kill millions of people. I tried to stop Brunhilde from starting Gotterdamerung. I may try to save Germany later ,but it maybe too little too late. This may be the best chance to save Germany. We are going for a ride.

Where are we going?

We are going to the great Geysir in Eisland. I will let you dismount here,

next to the Geysir.

Ach,I see Himmler Eichmann and Heydrich. They aren’t dead yet?

We have moved up in time four years. You see that they are right under the geysir. It us beginning to blow

The geysir erupts, the shades scream.

They will have to endure eruptions for each person they kill in the showers. You have just started the Endlosung.

I will have to endure the pain too.

You can if you want to. But I am sending you back. Himmler and Eichman must be stopped.

And so they restarted my breathing. Now you must stop them from coming to power. You have a lovely daughter. She can have a great future

.

Yes. And the only recording of Hitler speaking conversationally (not orating) was made in Finland during the visit referenced by the OP, which was on the occasion of the birthday of Marshal Mannerheim, the Finnish commander-in-chief. Hitler met with Mannerheim in a railroad car. Against orders, a Finnish intelligence officer bugged the room and recorded their discussion. That recording was used by the actor who played Hitler in Downfall.

The Italians had been defeated in Africa, but Rommel and the Afrika Korps had turned things around. The battle of Gazala was in progress at the time; it ended a few days later as a decisive Axis victory, with the fall of Tobruk.

As to the Eastern Front: The Germans had recovered from the Soviet winter offensive. The Axis had just crushed the Izyum salient, with over 250,000 Soviets killed or captured, cleared out the Kerch peninsula, with 170,000 Soviets killed or captured, and were already preparing for the Case Blau offensive into East Ukraine and the Caucasus. (It began on 24 June.)

Goering was less ambitious and less confident than Hitler, but at that time, the Axis was riding very high, and I don't see him pulling back very much.

OP, note that Heydrich died in a Prague hospital the very same day Hitler left for Finland, some hours before this sabotage would have taken place.

If it had not been for the incident in Finland, and if Hitler had not confirmed my father as succesor, I would never been able to get into politics, let alone Suedreichs Kanzerlerin werden. But there I was. By pulling troops from France, he killed two birds with one stone. The allies would be more willing to negotiate, and Goering got the jump on the SS, when, they still thought Hitler could recover. And after this letter was news, my father was able to round up the leading SS members, Himmler, USW.
he did not execute them, and allow them to be martyrs. Instead, he made a call to Franco. " Are you still unwilling to invade Gibraltar. You csn do me this favor. I have arrested Himmler and other SS members. Can uou recfeive them in Rio De Oro? I will send them to the border, and You can take over from there, They would be unlikey to escape in the desert."

Leaflets over Bir Hakheim, 8 June 1942: The Germans have withdrawn their occupation from Paris, and will continue to reduce their occupation. Germany will withdraw from all of France as soon as a peace with the Britain and the US is signed. and France will be free. The Germans are staying north of the Oise to counter any invasion across the channel. If the allies invade across the channel, France may be freed, but at what cost? With this message, the morale of the free French was somewhat reduced. They retreated to Bir Harmottwo days before OTL, and some of the French prisoners went over to official French side.

Go for Gozo: Since the Free French abandoned Bir Hakim two days earlier than OTL, the German staff decided that they could make a play for Malta. Instead of directly attacking Malta, they decided to land paratroops on Gozo. Since it was smaller than Malta , there would not be that many troops there and it would be harder to defend. When the German paras landed in Gozo on June 21, they found it lightly defended , and they took it easily. They decided not to attack the main island until they had success on the Russian front. As it was, they tied up a considerable number of British forces.

Division Purpura; Letter from fellow combatant in Catalonia to Eric Blair. You know that Franco has sent Division Azul to the Russian front. since Franco has been unwilling to move against Gibraltar , Goering has asked Franco to send another division. Franco has decided to organize a division consisting of Republicans who felt betrayed by the Russians, such as you. We see that Goering has mitigated the occupation of the Jews, and withdrawn the occupation from Paris. Also Stalin massacred a large number of Polish officers. Franco will give amnesty to any former republican fighter who joins this division. Since you have a high profile , you will be given a commission. If you are interested, can you meet me in Donostia? As long as Spain does not declare war on Britain, you might not be subject for treason.
Letter from Eric Blair in Donostia in Spain to his solicitor: Since I have been persuaded that the Russians are a greater threat than the Germans, i have decided to join the former Republicans to fight against the Russians. Since these were reddish and will be fighting along with the Division Azul, we are calling it the Division Purpura.
if I join, could I be executed for treason.
Answer: As long as Spain doe s not fight against Britain, I don't think you will be hanged for treason. However, you could spend a long time in prison.
