A few questions regarding John I Albert, King of Poland

Right, so I hope this is the correct place to put this down, and if not, I apologise.

Essentially put, I'm participating in a RP where I am the above chap, just as I become the King of Poland.

My biggest issue is, I have no wife (or heir who is not my brother), and frankly I'm finding it hard to find someone suitable. Thus, I come before this forum in the hopes of finding someone for that role.

Further, any advice in general about the state of the nation and what I can do to improve it, would be appreciated.

Yeah, but the player playing Alexander (IE, Lithuania) is quite opposed to creating the Union, and is seeking to make sure it never occurs.
He won't have a choice. Just tell him what the Polish nobility told the Lithuanians OTL - if you don't join us, we'll leave you alone with Moscow. The First Muscovite-Lithuanian War started in 1492, he'll regret his decision soon.

Even if you don't elect Alexander, you have a choice of either Ladislaus, which gives you a union with Hungary, or Sigismund, who, if married to Bona Sforza, will be the most effective Jagiellon ever. So the option still stands.

I'll think about it, but the issue is that both the GM and the Muscovite player seem at least somewhat willing to butterfly that away, since the POD is 20 years back. (Burgandy remains a thing).

Doesn't matter, Moscow/Russia and Lithuania were bound to clash at some point, Lithuania held Smolensk and Russia wanted it back.

If you really really want to stay as John Albert and need a wife, pick Bona Sforza. That way you have the justification to begin an early Volok Reform and Polish Renaissance.

You'll need to wait for her to be born though. :p

Also thanks for the responses thus far :)
Talking about Lithuania in alternate history is my job. I get paid by the post count.

(no I'm not)

I know, but I even /offered/ Poland to lithuania, in exchange for me simply playing as his subordinate and I was brushed off. I think there is some sort of dislike there.

Not really an option I don't think. Even if I don't die as early as I do OTL, that's still a long time.

Lol.

Do you have any tips in general for reforming the realm, or dealing with Mazovia or the Teutons? :)

Do the Volok Reform. It was originally Lithuanian, but you can apply it to Poland as well. Wikipedia says this:

The reform was a success in terms of the annual state revenue that quadrupled from 20,000 to 82,000 kopas of Lithuanian groschens.

Wave this in front of the GM's face and quadruple your income. /s

You can also deploy early Polish hussars, seeing as they first rose to prominence in the beginning of the 16th century.

Mazovia shouldn't be a problem. Konrad III will die in 1503 and leave two underage heirs, so just come up there and seize the land, they won't be able to fight back. The Teutons are already pretty much your vassal, they can't do any harm.

Oh, and once the Reformation rolls in - don't do anything. Don't burn books or kill heretics. In OTL, the Poles pretty much allowed everyone to follow whichever faith they wanted and they ended up as one of the most peaceful realms during the chaos.

Regarding possible wifes: what about Anastasia, the youngest sister of John Cicero, Elector of Brandenburg? She had an older sister married to Ladislaus II of Bohemia and Hungary, who was the brother of John I Albert, so it would increase the ties between Brandenburg, Poland and Hungary/Bohemia. Anastasia only married IOTL in 1500, and would be 18 by 1496, so it would be a possible catch. Also, by 1494 John I Albert was negotiating with John Cicero an expedition against the Turks, so a marriage could be negotiated as well.

A possibility, certainly. Thanks. :)
