A European Ain Jalut

European armies seemed to fare poorly against the Mongol invasions, Kiev being razed, Poland and Hungary being humiliated and so on.

That said, is it possible to imagine a European version of Ain Jalut? That is, a decisive defeat of a Mongol invasion of dramatic apparent historical importance?

Eventually yes, Hungary, Poland, the Rus, etc performed ably against the Golden Horde, but do they have to wait as long as OTL to be successful?

I presume that the analogous victor here would most likely be either Hungary or Poland, and perhaps the former has better geography for a mountain ambush of sorts.

Either of these is possible, but both battles were pretty one-sided. You'd need some pretty serious changes to turn either into a Christian victory.

My knowledge of Legnica extends about as far as it's described in Poland, by James Michener. There, it seemed fairly close.

That's exactly the issue.

Of those two though, the battle of Mohi seems a more apt potential analogue to Ain Jalut than Legnica. The latter wouldn't be decisive as far as the Mongols are concerned, whereas the Battle of Mohi has all Hungary at stake, and potentially much of the rest of Christian Europe.

Either way, there'd need to be a lot of luck, planning, and competent leadership to do things right--Maybe in Hungary's case, a victorious battle on the south side of the Carpathian peaks followed by a savage erosion of the battered Mongol tumens as they attempt to retreat across the mountains.
