A Dutch Brasil?

What would a "Northern Dutch Brazil" have looked like if say during the siege of Salvador the Dutch relief fleet had managed to arrive early and beat off the Spanish-Portuguese fleet and theDutch manage to at least hold onto everything in Brazil from Bahia to the north.

More than likely a few other events would be needed to secure Dutch hold but how may a Northern Dutch and Southern Protuguese Brazil have developed?

It was going to be nearly impossible to hold. Most of the landowners were Catholic and Portuguese, which posed a lot of control problems for the VWC.

Rebellions no doubt, for the Dutch they are going to have to be creative I think. Especially if they want access to all that sugar and cattle land.

Most likely make concessions to certain land owners and try and bring in more settlers which I think it looked like was starting to swing with the diamond and other various mineral booms found in the area.

Of course Portugal is going to be staring daggers at the Dutch the entire time and the territory may exchange hands further times with not just the Portugese but possibly the English and French.

Most of the landowners were fine with Dutch rule until the WIC started to stricten their rule. Pretty much all Dutch East Indian Empire was once Portuguese and the Portuguese-speaking locals were used as their proxies.

Whe would have the best football team in the world if Brazil remained Dutch.

I'm thinking along the lines of the Dutch fleet arrives earlier, managing to interrupt the Spanish-Portugese fleet besieging Salvador city. The Spanish-Portugese fleet flees and takes some ship loses but also loses a good amount of soldiers on land. They sail south and the Dutch fleet settles in with the supplies and ammunition. It's 1538.

So for the next two years the Dutch and Spanish-Portugese duke it out, trying to get a ahead of each other but it doesn't pan out much for either side.

This is going to really upset the Portugese Revolt in Portugal. Perhaps speeding up the time table and when that happens. It's going to essentially paralyze any attempt by the Spanish-Portugese forces in southern Brazil from working together in the lead up to the Treaty of Hague.

Now, will Spain try to spite Portugal and "sell" the Dutch Brasil?
