A Different United States

Off the top of my head:

1 - More initial States (Canadian Maritimes, Quebec, Bermuda, Florida, Bahamian islands) - early Ameriwank path

2 - Fewer initial States (some stay Loyalist or are taken and held) or less land (say no Appalachians to Mississippi after Treaty of Paris)

3 - No Texas, no New Mexico, no Cali

4 - Balkanized (either after ARW or ACW)

5 - No, lesser, or greater Oregon

6 - No Alaska

7 - Caribbean States (Dominican Republic, Cuba, PR)

8 - More Mexican States/larger Cession (Baja? Sonora? Rio Grande States? Yucatan?!?)

9 - Divided Texas (multiple States)

10 - No Louisiana Purchase

11 - No Hawaii

12 - Philippine State(s) (unlikely to say the least)

13 - No West Virgina - Virginia split

14 - No North/South Carolina split (assuming this doesn't butterfly ARW somehow)

15 - No N/S Dakota

Not to mention the thousandfold way State sizes and shapes and names and very existences could be different.

One easy way would of been to insist that all new states follow natural borders such as rivers.

Also any of the still born Califonia partitions

Also any of the pre ARW western land claims by various states are up held

No Homestead Act post ACW would greatly change the nature of the American West

This seems to ignore PODs about more or less federal centralisation- isn't that an important part of United States history?

Not if the POD starts with Articles of Confederation, which would be what you need to start something along those lines as far as what I proposed. As for divying up the sovereign state of Michigan and the rightful home of the GOP (pun intended), war shall be declared. We're so bad ass, we have N.G. and militia...

Catholic Appalachia!!!:D

or larger Jewish population in the US

or the Americans end up with both Western Canada and Alaska effectivly confining Canada to its eastern provinces.

More Russians in the Pacific Northwest.

A different border with Canada.

Canada keeps all of the Great Lakes region.

Different western boundaries for Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, Pennsylvania, etc.

Mexico keeps Texas and the Southwest.

California gold rush earlier.

California gold rush later, maybe during the Civil War.

Alaska gold rush earlier.

No Monroe Doctrine.

No Manifest Destiny.

Lincoln, Lee and Davis die early.

Some Alexander-the-Great type unifies the West Indies into a powerful nation ca. 1800.

Cuba a part of the US.

Independent Florida, Texas, California, Vermont, Pacific Northwest.

New York City a separate entity from New York State, which is renamed Albany.

Free blacks given their own state, or independent nation in the West.
The same is done for Indians, Chinese, and maybe others.

Add more states...

Give the U.S. a continuous coastine starting from San Diego in the West, then running North, until reaching the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo del Norte in the East:D

Depending on the precise point of divergence, many or most states after the firtst 13 or 15 could be very different in such a timeline.
