A different thought

We always see and hear discussions of the Ameriwank, usually followed with phrases like "MURRIKA! FUCK YEAH!" And with this idea, visions of the United States spanning the entire Pan-Americas like a tidal wave. Well, what about this? Stifle America. How could America be stifled to only going as far as the Ohio River Valley or never expanding upon its original thirteen colonies.

There has to be more than just America decides not to.

A few posibilities:

  • Divide and rule - Britain stays in charge and keeps the 13 separate
  • Support native land rights - with armed forces or military aid
  • Spain stays strong and retains the west coast

Other Maybes

- French Revolution doesn't go off the rails, Louis XVI lives with reduced powers, no general European war, Louisiana stays Spanish

- Failure of the Constitutional Convention, keeping the federation loose, and thus restricting expansion to the power of the states themselves, which will soon be squabbling over Westward expansion to the Mississippi

- British victory in 1812 war, seeing creation of an independent/autonomous Indiana for the Indians. Of course, by then the Louisiana Purchase has occurred so it doesn't exactly fulfil your requirements, but such a defeat could lead to no further expansion beyond this limit

- Greater Russian penetration
