Mission to Africa
Tinwald,Dumfriesshire,Kingdom of Scotland

April,1658

In the small town of Tinwald a women grieved for her baby boy that had died his name was William Paterson. The harsh winter air of Scotland had chilled the baby with a cold causing him to go to god before his time.

May,1698 Edinburgh,Kingdom of Scotland

The company of Scotland's board of directors held a vote where ultimately they shot down the idea of a colony on the Darien peninsula. But the argument of the presentations in favor of the Darien initiative had spooked the directors. The arguments that the English would annex Scotland and absorb the company had frightened the directors.

The directors agreed they had to do something but they couldn't agree some argued they should establish a colony on the Indian Ocean while others rambled about the cost of a colony a compromise was found the directors agreed to set up a fort at the halfway point between Cape Town and Luanda.

And so on July,4,1698 two hundred men of the company of Scotland set off to Africa and to a new fate.

Fort William
August,5,1698

Three ships of the Company of Scotland sailed into a lagoon. The company had specifically ordered that this strategic location be settled by the two hundred Scottish soldiers. The soldiers looked around getting a feeling of dread in there gut. The soldiers were questioning the sanity of the directors. I mean there were pretty pink birds and bountiful catches of fish but this place was a desert.

Despite the feeling in there gut the soldiers unloaded there supplies got off the boat and started setting up tents. The soldiers that weren't pitching tents were keeping gaurd for hostile natives.

By time night fell a city of tents had been built. The soldiers at preserves by the fire and once there bellys were full the soldiers who did not have the night shift retired to there warm awaiting cots.

The next day

The men woke up and ate a breakfast of rations and preserves. After breakfast the men got two work jobs were assigned forty men were assigned to scout the area and find a water source or alternatively how to turn saltwater into fresh water.

The men worked hard building barracks and a main complex for the fort and a wooden palisade. By the end of the week the majority of the men were out of tents and into a communal barracks the men shared with ten other men. To house two hundred men twenty of these mini barracks were built.
In honor of the king of Scotland the fort was named Fort William.
