A Different Italian Unification?

Just musing about some other ways that Italy could have unified. A secular republic or a religious federation headed by the Pope, perhaps?

One scenario I find tremendously interesting is where an alt-French Revolution erupts in the Papal States and Italy is unified under a radical, militant atheist republic...

I'v always thought that if Napoleon never invaded Russia, he would stay in power long enough to unify Italy and make it a liberal client state, as with Spain.

But Napoleon didn't want to unify Italy. Whatever he didn't annex directly to France was given to his satraps as nominally independent polities.

Well, what if he did. He started the German unification, and I would argue that he brought Italy the closest to unification until the actual unification.
