A different India.

Could india have been socialistic after it gained its independence instead of democatic? I am thinking something like Gandhi's Ashrams. How would it have affected the cold war? How long would it have lasted if it's possible?

India WAS economically socialist for many years and still is to some degree.

I'm not totally sure I understand your question, but a Democratic India was by no means a sure thing. A unified India wasn't a sure thing either, and convincing the 600 or so rulers of the princely states to give up their thrones was no mean feat.

Umm...democracy and socialism aren't mutually exclusive. India was democratic and avowedly socialist up 'til the early 90's when they opened their economy to the free market. The states of Kerala and West Bengal have had democratically elected communist governments for much of that time- Communist rule in Kerala has actually given it the highest literacy and educational standards in India.

If you mean an agrarian utopian policy like Gandhi's then the country would have collapsed in blood and fire. Too many competing interests- almost all Indians revered Gandhi as the Father of the nation but nowhere near all of them agreed with all of his ideology.
