One recurring topic that ive seen come up is one where the Reagen revolution was averted due to various events in the 70s, either with Ford or Rocky being president in the late 70s and getting blamed for the economic problems. I was thinking that in such a world, particularly if a liberal like Mondale or Kennedy got elected in 80 and redefined things it would be McGovern's defeat in 72 that was seen as the one reflecting the shifting paradigm longterm as opposed to Goldwater 64 and the new left would have probably been seen as a success. Also the baby boomers would be seen as having stuck to the politics of they're youth and free marketism would be seen as an ancient pre-New deal ideology.
