A Different Germany

Here's what I was thinking of, what if the July 20, 1944 plot to kill Hitler had succeeded? I know this has probably been discussed before, but this is what I though of:

1944

July 20: A bomb explodes during a conference at the Wolf's Lair. Hitler and other top Nazi officials are killed. Carl Friedrich Goerdeler is appointed Chancellor of Germany. SS leaders are arrested.

July 21: All German forces are ordered to halt military operations. Appeals are made to the Allies for peace. Concentration camps are placed under guard by Wehrmacht troops. Slave labor is suspended. Beginning of U-Boat withdrawal from the Atlantic.

July 22: British and American troops ordered to cease fire.

July 23: Russian troops ordered to cease fire.

August 2: American, and German diplomats meet to discuss surrender terms.

August 3: German troops begin to withdraw from front lines.

August 15: American, British, French, Dutch, Belgian, Russian and German diplomats meet to discuss surrender terms.

August 17: Germany is returned to 1935 borders and is occupied by American and British military police units, although it is granted government autonomy. Germany is allowed a modest army and a defensive air force. Concentration camps are shut down. The Soviets are not allowed access into Germany.

August 21: Beginning of American selective withdrawal of troops from Europe.

August 26: Beginning of Soviet selective withdrawal of troops from Europe.

August 31: Germany officially surrenders.

September 1: SS is officially disbanded.

September 9: Start of war crimes trials in Germany.

November 14: New German constitution is approved.

1945

March 20: British troops from Europe retake Rangoon.

April 8: First British jet aircraft make their appearance in the Pacific.

May 16: Soviet troops invade Manchuria.

July 17: Japan agrees to the Potsdam ultimatum--unconditional surrender.

August 5: Japan formally surrenders.

August 26: Beginning of selective withdrawal of Allied forces from the Pacific.

September 21: Manchuria is officially accepted as a state in the Soviet Union.

1949

February 17: NATO is formed.

1950-1951: Korean War. China cannot access N. Korea by land, and the Soviets do not allow Chinese troops to cross Manchuria. American forces push back the small North Korean army and a new democratic country, Korea, is formed from the earlier two. Douglas MacArthur retains his position as general because of the victory.

1959

March 3: Warsaw Pact is formed with only a few member countries.

1950's-1960's: America is head-to-head with or beating the USSR during the space race, thanks to its full access to German technology.1950's-1980's: With their access to the Yellow Sea, the Russians find a need to build a larger surface navy, namely, more Kirov, Slava and Kiev class ships, at the expense of the army and air force. Since the Soviets have more influence in the east and less influence in the west than actually happened, more eastern European, Baltic and Balkans countries have democracies and stronger economies. More of the USSR is made up of rural areas, as the highly populated lands in eastern Europe have not been taken. In the 1970's and 1980's, the US is far ahead of the USSR in military prowess.

1987

June 11: The Soviet Union officially collapses. Manchuria is an independent democratic country.

December 30: UN nations meet to condemn the invasion.

January 17: Chinese troops reach the Yalu river.

January 30: UN forces begin to move troops to Korea after the Gulf War.

February 3: Chinese troops take Changchun, capital of Manchuria.

February 6: Manchuria surrenders.

March 2: America warns China to leave Manchuria or face 'serious consequences.' (China ignores warning.)

March 19: America launches a preemptive air strike on Manchuria with devastating effects.

April 12: America launches a full land invasion of Manchuria from Korea along with an amphibious attack at Lushun, west of the Korean border. The Chinese, though outclassed technologically, have superior numbers of troops. Soon the invasion becomes bogged down and it looks like Vietnam all over again.

July 23: American advance completely stops.

August 15: China starts using tactical nuclear weapons against American troops.

August 16: China launches an offensive against American forces and begins to regain ground.

August 18: The UN declares an international emergency and commits troops to the fight.
