A different Burma

WI: There was no military coup in Burma in 1962 ? How would this affect the country, how would it affect Southeast Asia? Would Burma be better off than in OTL without the military coup? Would there still be a coup later in the 60's or 70's? Would this impact the Vietnam war & the Cold War? In my opinion, I think that if it hadn't been for this military coup, Burma could have been a regional power and a powerful economy by 2011. What do you guys think?

Probably Burma still remains a weak federation with decentralised powers, which may be the most stable way forward. U Nu was a reasonable politican, although if you truly want a stable Burma than not having Aung San assasinated in 1948 is a great start. That was the year that you had ethnic minorities in senior positions such as Colonel Smith - Dunn as head of the Army. However even if you do not have a coup in '62 it is likely that you will have a coup or attempted coup later on due to the personalities involved.
