Mildly inspired by the travel guides, this is a thread for a short exploration of any given alternate timeline through short little news stories, book snippets, TV Shows, Movies, etc. from another timeline.

World 79: Trade Blocks

Dumont News Network: May 29, 2014.

"German President Kirsten Limbach met with her counterparts in Stockholm, Sweden, to discuss the North European Free Trade Area's response to the situation in Poland and Belarus, two nations who have applied both to the European Union and the NEFTA for membership, dispite turmoil in both states. The multination economic block NEFTA, consists of Germany, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The Faroe Islands meet on equal footing with the other members, despite being legally part of Denmark. Typically, meetings rotate between members' countries. The trade group last met in Posen, Germany, and before that, Vyborg, Finland."

AZN News: March 11, 2014

"From Sydney, Australia, representatives across the British Commonwealth are meeting to discuss several key measures in the Pacific region. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Jamaica, Malta, New Caledonia, and even the territorial representatives, including Gibraltar, the Azores, Bermuda, and the Caymans, to discuss the Commonwealth's opening of new trade agreements with South China and Korea. Some are saying that this will be a great opportunity for Commonwealth subjects in Australia and New Zealand, but others cite reports of poor pay and work conditions especially in South China as reasons either not to go along, or to make very strong workers' rights demands on the rising nations."

DW: May 8, 2014

"French President Pierre Devereaux met today with German President Kirsten Limbach at the World War II memorial in Straßburg, Germany, at a small ceremony attended by veterans of the German Resistance to the French occupation, and their role in freeing Europe from the grip of national socialism and fascism."

AFP: April 9, 2014

"Queen Elizabeth III met Greek President Vangelis Samaris in the capital, Constantinople, on a state visit. British Prime Minister David Grenville will be meeting later this month about opening both sides of Gibraltar to Greek trade, while Greece would be allowing British trade through the Straits, and discuss the future of British military bases on Cyprus, Crete, and in Smyrna."

AFP: May 1, 2014

"Representatives from France spoke today in Budapest at the EU Parliament about growing concern of the Eurozone. The EU Council, which represents the countries, met late in April to discuss possible coordinated interest rate easing, but did not make a final decision. Italy, Romania, and Greece have expressed interest in beginning what they are calling 'quantitative easing' to help revive the European economies."

CNN: June 6, 2014

"President William Madison is stopping today in Rio Grande to help members of his party seeking re-election today in Monterrey, before visiting Jefferson City, Sonora, South California's San Diego University, and Vancouver, Washington, on a three part west coast tour promoting his plan for greater cooperation with the British Commonwealth, possibly entering a permanent free trade agreement with the multinational trade area, which could help boost American jobs."

World 81: More Football

Taft Broadcasting: February 23, 2014

"Tonight, on Fox, you will see the main event, the one you've been waiting for since the Super Bowl. The World Bowl! Ever since football evolved from the sport of rugby, Americans, Brits, and Canadians have played each other. Our troops played in WW1 and WW2, spreading the sport to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and even to other countries in Europe, notably Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands, where Americans brought the game while rebuilding those countries. What first started in the late 19th century as a few games played between England and the US has evolved into the most watched television event of the year. This year, we have the American team, the Dallas Texans, fighting off against the English team, the Monarchs, in what is sure to be an exciting match. Nearly every year, an American team has come to the World Bowl, and the Texans are a strong competitor."

"That's right, Alex, but you've got to admit, the Monarchs have had an amazing season too. They defeated the Berlin Adlers in the Europe Bowl not four weeks ago, and fresh off that victory in a 38-12 match, what with superstar quarterback Nigel Wilkinson throwing an amazing 52-yard pass to Terrance O'Brien for the final score in that game. The World Bowl's even being held in home territory this year, the London Stadium, for them. The home field advantage has to be taken into account.

You got that right, Steve. Now, let's take a short recap into this season across the globe to see the best games of the season, from the USA and Canada, to the United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, South Africa, all the way to Australia and New Zealand."

World 91: Tech Scramble

CNet: May 1, 2014

"Here we are at Zune World, Microsoft's latest in a long line of smartphones. First starting with media players, then increasing marketshare over the years, Zune faced stiff competition from Apple's iPod, which was released years prior. When Apple turned to smartphones, Microsoft released their Metro interface, or the ZuneOS as most call it, to allow apps to be made by anyone in the Zune Marketplace. That opened the floodgates, and even with Apple announcing almost the same time, with Zune already in place, and compatibility with billions of PCs, and ever tighter integration, Apple struggled to gain a foothold in smartphones. That struggle is going to get even more difficult with Microsoft's new ZuneOS 5.0. From eye candy such as parallax 3D wallpapers, to new 42MP cameras, and cloud synch and ZuneCasting to the X-Box One, the new phone is going to have it all, and we'll be reporting live during the announcement."

ZDNet: May 2, 2014

"MobileOS Marketshare, via Prussian TechStat Service:

Android (latest 5.9): 47%
ZuneOS: 39%
Apple: 12%
Other: 2%

Desktop Marketshare:

Windows Blackfoot (8.2): 21%
Windows Meridian (7): 29%
Windows Longhorn (5.5): 10%
Windowx XP: 9%
Mac OS X: 5%
Amiga: 10.1%
Atari: 11.2%
AcornOS: 4.7%

Acorn still holds strong in a number of British companies worldwide. Amiga is particularly strong in Europe and Canada, while Atari holds large numbers of users in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Windows by and large dominates the landscape, with Blackfoot and its new dual interface gaining large numbers of fans worldwide. You can choose either the new mobile-friendly touch interface, the desktop, or you can use the desktop with the mobile Start Screen if you choose. Bringing up the rear, is Apple's MacOS X, which has its devoted, almost religious fanbase, though its marketshare is again dwindling from a high of 8% worldwide."

Game Informer: June Issue

"This year we have a number of big innovations, and big releases. We have Doom 4 on the Atari Panther, the 64-bit HD-DVD-based game system released November last year, along with Rayman, Tomb Raider and Pitfall: Jungle Raid.

Nintendo's new Playstation 3 is out, also with HD-DVD, and will carry a new Super Mario World 3D: Worlds of Time, along with Legend of Zelda: First Battle, which is suspected to be the first iteration of the Zelda-Link characters in that timeline. Donkey Kong Country 4 will also be joining the big 2 from Nintendo.

Sega's new Neptune system will be coming out with a brand new Sonic Galaxies, a vast, visually rich, and exciting 3D game that takes everyone's favorite speedster to new heights of visual excitement. Also, Nintendo and Sega have again worked together with the co-branded games Mario Party / Sonic Party and Nintendo-Sega Olympics, bringing each other's premier franchises to one another's systems. Those games are always eagerly anticipated for the third year in a row.

Finally, the X-Box One will have Halo 5, Gears of War, Tomb Raider, and Resident Evil: Remastered, remixing the first two games of that series, once thought too violent for Nintendo, and now a premiere franchise for Microsoft, having first shown on the Saturn and Jaguar 2."
