Episode 1: A Different Kind of War (1914-1921)

A Wrong Turn for France

War is an odd thing. In the month leading up to what, in our world, would be World War I France and Britain almost declared neutrality and let the Germans attack the Russians. That didn't happen, of course, but I'm going to ask a different question, one asked by Niall Ferguson: What if Britain had stayed out of it?

But how would such a thing even be possible? Let's look at the end of July 1914. France, and Britain, had amazingly demobilized hoping to head off the crisis. However, what if France hadn't demobilized. What if they decided to head the Germans off. This leads them to ask the Belgians to be able to move through their country. However, before the French could even send the telegram, the French invaded Belgium.

And that's when things really changed, there was no going back. It was Tuesday, July 28th, 1914. And nothing would ever be the same.

France, not Germany, becomes the villain of the 20th Century, with virulent anti-Semitism and a stab-in-the-back mythos that's deeply anti-British. The British willl be furious and either stay out of the war or enter with limited objectives (defending Belgium but being neutral as to France and Russia).

Hmm... The French invade Belgium, and THAT'S how this World War 1 is sparked off... Interesting, especially since I'm Belgian... Watched, for sure!

Congrats on creating the timeline! I can't wait to see just how badly this backfires for France in the future. Hell even Konrad von Hotzendorf would never be so stupid. Looking forward to more.

Interesting. Minor nitpick but the n is missing from Damn in the title. Wonder how this goes. Keep it up!

I thought from the title that it was going to be about building a dam.

Yeah I know. If there are any dams in that part of Belgium I would find some way of reference it . But, as far as I'm aware, there aren't any. So this is a damn foolish spelling mistake.
