A cruder, coarser society

What changes would be necessary to make western society noticeably less mannerly, coarser, and cruder than it is today? And would such changes start in Europe, often the source of social trends, or would they begin in the New World (in which I'll include Australia and New Zealand given the relatively recent settlement of those lands by westerners)? What social nicety would you suggest would be the first to be discarded?

Given the economic imperative is to broaden the Middle Class it won't happen, given politeness and the like are part of the middle class package on how to get along in the world. On the other hand if the middle class isn't pumped up as much then we won't get their (my?) prudish habits.

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

ISAAC ASIMOV, "A Cult of Ignorance", Newsweek, Jan. 21, 1980

I believe Asimov's comment supports the OP's concept.

I'm trying to think about what this would actually look like in practice. I picture a secretary answering the phone, with a pleasant, formal voice:

"Mr Rim's office; may I ask what the fuck you want?"

Another scene -- two coworkers are talking to each other, and are about to part ways.

"Well, I've got to get back to work; piss off Bob. "

(leaves with a smile and a wave) "Up your ass Bill."

So kinda like Spain after Franco? A huge repudiation of general wholesomeness after enforced family values? Perhaps a quasi-fascist 1950's or some other general communal focused right-authoritarian society. Of course, this question is broad enough you can find a POD in a lot of places.
