A cool site: Worldmapper

Maps of the world, with the size of countries distorted to reflect various statistics (e.g. population today, population in 1 AD, emigration, immigration and so on). Makes it easier to intuituitively grasp the differences between countries.

It would be beyond me, but I'm thinking it might be good for creating those "the world according to" maps. You could increase the size of the important countries and every other country would automatically shrink to leave the total land area the same size.

You know those maps of who voted for Bush/Kerry in the last election, with virtually the entire country coloured Republican Red?

The 'births' one is interesting: I had assumed that Europe was going to be much smaller than the US, but no. It's Russia that's virtually vanished off the map.
