A Convenient Truth

A CONVENIENT TRUTH
- THE GORE ADMINISTRATION AND BEYOND -

“Winston Churchill aroused this nation in heroic fashion to save civilization in World War Two.
We have everything we need except political will, but political will is a renewable resource.”
- Al Gore

Welcome back to Election Night in America. The first election of the new millennium has been an extremely close one, between Vice President Al Gore of Tennessee and Governor George Bush of Texas. Gore has played on the successes of Clinton in bringing America to a budget surplus, and Bush has criticized the Clinton administration for being morally corrupt and overspending and a reintroduction of Reagan ideals in the White House. Gore selected New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen, only the second female VP candidate for the Democratic Party after Geraldine Ferraro in order to repair what some view as a damaged relationship with women after Clinton's infamous scandal with Monica Lewinsky. Ralph Nader, running as the Green Party candidate, has only thrown a greater wrench in polling, and made an already close election come down to the wire. The entire presidential election has come down to New Hampshire and Florida, certainly living up to its hype.

I have just been informed that we have a major projection to make at this time...

After nearly all of the votes have been counted, Al Gore has pulled out a victory in New Hampshire, which will put him just over the 270 mark and earn him the Presidency. Bush targeted this state heavily throughout the campaign since early polls designated it competitive, but Gore’s choice of the state’s Governor Shaheen was a massive factor that certainly helped this state remain in the blue column in the end. Both candidates knew that these four electoral votes could make or break their campaign, and it happens to be that Gore’s choices helped secure his final victory.

The final state to remain up in the air is Florida, with Gore only a few hundred votes ahead of Bush. This state has been a nail-biter the entire night, and even though it will not affect the outcome of the presidential election, it is extremely unlikely that we will be able to call the state before the night is over. It is close enough that it will go into an automatic recount for another time, and there are still ballot inaccuracies and absentee ballots that may play a role in where Florida ends up.

At 271 electoral votes, Vice President Gore has become President-Elect Gore, but in a fashion much unlike President Clinton. The upper south has shifted significantly towards the Republican Party, solidifying a shift in the political system that began with Nixon’s southern strategy. The fact that Gore lost his home state by a margin of over 5% says a lot about how much has changed with this new century.

Thank you for staying tuned in to ANN tonight for Election Night in America. The new millennium will be ushered in with another four years of a Democratic presidency. Will Clinton’s policies be continued, especially the budget surplus? How will the debacle in Florida be solved, and how is it going to affect future elections? These, and many more, are questions that journalists and policymakers will be facing in the days and weeks to come as we welcome the Gore administration.

I'M BACK! :D

After an extremely long hiatus (Senior year of high school was way too busy) I am finally back to writing! I was trying to brainstorm another FH timeline, but I simply couldn't get any good ideas, so I decided to take the standard FH format and apply it to a real alternate history scenario. I promise that this will not be like any President Gore TL you guys have seen so far: there will be plenty of twists and surprises, and I can't wait to show you guys all that I have planned!

Oooooh. I'm not really a fan of Gore, but I much prefer him to Bush...and this means Lieberman ain't going to be in power!

Yeah, the DLC is alive and well, baby!

Also, did you make the graphics or did you take them from somewhere else because they're quite good.

I don't believe I've ever seen a timeline based on Gore winning by New Hampshire, or VP Shaheen. You have my interest!

Very nice graphics as well.

Most... excellent. </Burnsie>

Off topic, I just noticed your signature. Many thanks. :D
