HELP - Hendrix, Emerson, Lake and Palmer
(1970-1973)
One of the most influential supergroups of the early 70s, it was composed of Jimi Hendrix (The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Band of Gypsys) on guitar and vocals, Keith Emerson (The Nice) on keyboards, Greg Lake (King Crimson) on bass and vocals, and Carl Palmer (Atomic Rooster) on drums. Their iconic sound, which helped define the burgeoning progressive rock movement by melding Hendrix's psychedelic licks with Emerson's baroque sensibilities, while the rhythm section of Lake and Palmer helped keep their seemingly clashing styles together. In turn, Hendrix and Lake turned out to be a formidable vocal tag team, with the American guitarist's raspier voice contrasting with the English bassist's smooth pipes.
They recorded three albums together before tensions, particularly between the mercurial Hendrix and Emerson, led to a disbandment in 1973.
