A Charlemagne-Less World

Say that either Charlemagne isn't born, or he dies before he becomes King. What happens to the world?

Medieval Europe I think would be fairly similar, except the *Holy Roman Empire would be less laughable.

And this is my 1000th post!

Couple of questions:

- will the new king extend wequal patronage to the Anglo-Saxon missionaries?

- will the papacy be able to parlay its royal unction into a position of power similar to that it squeezed out of the imperial coronation?

- Will there be an extension of Frankish royal authority eastwards?

If the answer is 'no', we will get very different developments down the line.

Without Charlemagne there wouldn't be any sort of empire in France or Germany though... it would stay divided longer.

Congrats.

I did something like this, but it made the Franks have a total collapse, Ibero-Muslims reach all the way across Southern France, and a Saxon Kingdom...

Charlemagne isn't born:
Karloman is king of the Franks until his death 771. If his widow Gerberga is able to have one of their sons Pepin or .... elected king, his dynasty might just go on for some time, only to fall apart later like OTL in some quarrel of inheritage, or just following his death. Might lead to some serious break up of the Frankish empire and much more Viking fun....:D

Charlemagne dies before 768:
Karloman is king of the Franks until his death 771. If his widow Gerberga is able to have one of their sons, Pepin or ... elected king, his dynasty might just go on for some time, onle to fall apart later like OTL in some quarrel of inheritage, or just following his death. Might lead to some serious break up of the Frankish empire and much more Viking fun....:D
