During Bush's administration, the Republican Party has, as a whole, stayed relatively united behind him, with only occasional mavericks (like Paul or Hagel) criticising his administration.
However, how could dissent within the party towards the Bush administration have gained such strength that a primary challenge to Bush's renomination in 2004 could have been mounted? Either as a serious effort or as a protest candidacy?
This might have been much easier without 9/11. However, could such a campaign have been launched on an anti-Iraq War platform? And who could have been the 'stop-Bush' candidate?
Possible choices include:
Lincoln Chafee (the basis, incidently, for the main character in my current story, which is based on a similar premise)
Chuck Hagel
Ron Paul
Gen. Wesley Clark (who didn't openly identify as a Democrat until late 2003, when he jumped into the race)
