A challenge to Bush in 2004?

How about a complete disaster in Iraq? Like the casaulty rate being much higher or it's proven beyond all reasonable doubt that there were no WMD's fom the outset?

OK, I've finally gotten a copy of Lincoln Chafee's autobiography, and here is the relevant quote:

I wanted to see someone oppose President Bush in the Republican primary. The alternative was to watch him spend the entire primary season in his comfort zone, speaking in slogans to friendly, handpicked Republican audiences. I thought we might finally have the debate that Congress had avoided in 2002. I considered doing it myself. In the fall of 2003, part of me thought it was cowardly to oppose the president on so many issues and then not oppose him head-on as he sought renomination. But reality trumped reason...

[Bush captures Saddam...]

President Bush was triumphant for a few weeks following Saddam's capture. Anyone who had jumped into the New Hampshire primary against him would have been up against this moment of glory. As always, timing is everything in politics.

So we have a time (late 2003, up to December), a casus belli (everything, pretty much) and a protagonist. Fifth Hamlin gets more plausible all the time...

Non starter without massive changes in other areas. Look how bad off Jimmy carter was in 1980 and he still beat Ted Kennedy.
