A Bush 96 presidency - opinion

I think Dubya could most likely run in 1996 and win if the popular opinion was stable in a prospect of another war in Iraq was very positive, I think in this timeline in the Philippines Gloria Arroyo would also be president in 1998 in the philippines..

I doubt that GWB would we willingful run on this point yet. Would even Republicans yet intrested?

And how GWB would win Clinton? He was extremely popular so it would be quiet difficult. And people probably still remember too well his father's presidency.

Yea, '96 was too soon for another Bush and to top that off, Dubya had only been Governor at that point for less than two years. Also, '96 was Bob Dole's turn and Bob Dole wouldn't be too pleased if Bob Dole lost the nomination for a third time in a row. Clinton was also going to be hard to beat with the good economy and Gingrich shooting himself and the entire Republican party in the foot by shutting the government down.

I thought the general consensus is that 1996 was a "sacrificial lamb" year - the challengers offered up token opposition to an opponent they knew they had no chance of beating, like what happened with McCain in 2008 and Mondale in 1984.

Here's an idea: he wins his 1978 House bid, gets elected to the Senate in 1984, and the Governorship in 1990. By 1996, he's got nearly 20 years experience and most likely a national profile. Especially if all else basically follows OTL.

It was. More so than 2008, but not as much as '84

The Other POD's would be a different 1991 for the Bushes like a popular gulf war but Clinton narrowly wins in 1992 or Clinton does worse in the latter part of his first administration we can add up a different fate for Princess Diana as a part of the butterflies..

I think he will win Popular and Electoral vote if he runs as the Republican candidate in 1996, but he will be slightly better than Trump in that scenario, he will be known as an OJT President.
