A blooky mud-hole

In a reasonably-enginered universe, trench warfare should not work.

high concentrations of troops are difficult to supply,
hygenic conditions are a nightmare and epidemics spread along armies,
shoulder-to-shoulder vicinity of soldiers allow the spreading of rebellious (socialist) doctrines making mutinies frequent, going underground makes nerves break, and so on.

It is only a wonder that in our universe it seems to work

What would be the consequence if not?

high concentrations of troops are difficult to supply,

Well, in a universe where these high concentrations of troops are difficult to supply, high concentrations of civilians will be difficult to supply as well, right? Which means that in such a universe there will likely be an upper bound for population density.

Furthermore, any natural disaster with thousands of refugees will imply a logistical nightmare even in western countries. We can expect that in such a universe thousands of Haitians and Chilenians (?) will starve to death.

hygenic conditions are a nightmare and epidemics spread along armies,

Again, any major natural disaster in such a universe should result in major epidemics even in western countries.

shoulder-to-shoulder vicinity of soldiers allow the spreading of rebellious (socialist) doctrines making mutinies frequent,

This implies that in any school or university and all large factories mutinies should be frequent.

To sum up, I think if trench warfare does not work from logistical and hygienic reasons, we'd have significant problems in supplying any larger amount of humans. Particularly, any rescue effort in Haiti should be futile in such a universe.
