January 11, 1990: The reason for Larry Bird's resignation from the Indiana Pacers is made obvious. He announces that he will seek the Democratic nomination for the position of U.S. Senator. He is expected to face off against Senator Dan Coats, who had been appointed to the role to fill out the rest of Dan Quayle's Senatorial term after he resigned the office to serve as Vice-President. The election will take place on November 6, 1990.

February 1, 1990: Larry Bird dominates the public opinion polling for the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate with 80% of the vote while his only competition for the nomination, State Representative Dan Coats, holds 10% of the vote.

March 30, 1990: Before the first season game for the Indiana Pacers, Larry Bird's number "33" is retired.
