A bigger ROC remnant?

How could the ROC have still lost the civil war but kept more than Taiwan?

  • Hainan is an obvious possibility, had the ROC navy been more competent early on
  • Could they have gotten the Ryukyu islands from Japan post WWII? Few Chinese there, but that wouldn't disturbe anyone back then.
  • What about a bridgehead on the mainland? Maybe the Japanes fortify one or several costal cities so heavily, that the reds can't take them.
Port Arthur would be the perfect candidate, but it was occupied by the Soviets OTL.

I can see Hainan, which the Reds didn't take until 1950, IIRC. Anything on the mainland is doomed, however.

I wonder if a ROC south of the Yangtze river would work, given enough foresight on CKS's part. But then again, given the nonlinear support base of the CPC, it seems unlikely that the ROC would be able to hold such a massive part of the mainland without actually defeating the CPC or forcing them into Manchuria.

So Hainan seems like a possibility, especially if supported by the USN.

You could have Marshall succeed, but lets be honest thats not gonna happen. Or even better, have Marshall never go to China, resulting in a Nationalist victory and a Communist Manchuria. So thats quite a bit bigger.

What about an ROC remnant in Yunnan?
The darn French would probably not allow it, unless there's an agreement that the ROC can stay in Vietnam without any administration and that it would not conduct cross-border fighting.
