A Better Tomorrow (60's onwards)

I've seen a lot of cynical threads so I decided to propose a more optimistic idea: Using POD's from the 60's onwards, make the world better for 2012.

Bonus points if you can provide a clear explanation for your ideas.

Well you could make things a bit better in the 60s if it gets leaked out that the US had to abandon some strategic assets in Turkey, thus Khrushchev's position is more stable, while Kennedy's one one probably isn't too badly effected. Kennedy survives Dallas, and while he doesn't get the presidency in 1964, he remains public and influencial, speaking out against escalation of the Vietnam war and promoting better race-relations. The latter point gets him shot again, but he again survives, and the incident becomes a turning point, as the publicity turns against the 'white supremacy' movement.

Well, there's the classic of no Vietnam War (which an averted Kennedy assassination should achieve) -- to start with, that means less riot damage in 1967, which taken with no 1968 King assassination, means much less panic and backlash against Civil Rights; the War on Crime and subsequent War on Drugs, if they even still happen at all, don't take the overtones of OTL; and future decades don't see OTL's huge increase of incarceration.

Some famous news story about Africa hits major headlines causing a summit like Kyoto but on poverty, disease and ignorance. Instead of a 1 billion people lacking clean water in 2012 it's dropped to like 10 million or something. The AIDs epidemic is cut off with 1/3 college/uni students from the Western World travelling to Africa/other povertised countries for volunteering. (What this does is it makes most people realise how bad it is)

The advent of digital media reinforces this, and some sort of government says they will raise taxes across the board by 0.01% and donate it all to providing education, aid, and shit under a new UN department, more countries donate to this, and rich celebrities all do charity shit to boost their PR, as well as companies.

Because news is a lot more interconnected and global genocide in countries is not allowed to be ignore by the public, the Gulf War never gets off due to mass peace protests.

---

Super unlikely probably.

Pretty much the Western World isn't really relevant, they're living it large as it is, they don't need better lives.
