A balkanized China

If current People Republic of China collapse for some imaginary reasons, and then later on multiple new successor states rise from the chaos (in short China follow the path taken Yugoslavia). What those new states will be?

Will it be divided by ethnic/language/region/religion?

I only can imagine that Hong Kong, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia become independent but what of Han dominated areas? Will they be various new states declaring their independent or will those areas still group together.

What do you think of it?

Hong Kong I really cant imagine being independant. Hong Kong is simply too small, and lacks any means to defend itself. It does not have a barren wasteland to shield itself like Mongolia, Tibet or Xinjiang, nor does it have anything that can be reformed into a military. A Guangdong warlord could just sweep in and take everything at will. Hongkongers also just hope for stability, so I see it staying with the strongest power in the reigon, say Guangdong.

If China falls apart prior to 1997 what are the chances the British keep it?

Well, 100%. If we broke off a random piece of Chinese Warlord, say 2 Chinese States, Britain would be able to run right over it. I suspect Britain would also play a major role in UN peacekeeping. But the problem is that wars arent particularly good for the world economy. Hk being a major port for entrance to China will bear the brunt of an economic collapse.
