A Balkan *Mohammed?

I thought this might be an interesting alternative to the No Mohammed or Christian Mohammed WIs - what if instead of Arabia, "Mohammed" is born in the Balkans (somewhere in modern Serbia, maybe?) in 570 AD? What was the local religious situation? How strong was the eastern Empire at the time? Could his territory and religion have spread northward into modern Hungary and Poland?

Any thoughts from people who know the period?

I think, at that time, people were ironing out the standard Christian worldview what with the Nicene Creed and whatnot and were stamping out people they viewed as heretics.

I think Muhammad's gonna have a bad time.

Slavs were still very pagan at that time, and it'd be a lot easier if it was north of the Danube, harder to reach initially for Byzantine authorities. If this 'Balkan prophet' unites enough Slavs in the new faith's name, he can perhaps establish a Slavic theocracy/empire over the Balkans and push west into Germanic lands or east into Anatolia. Expect Sassanids to take advantage of the chaos in East Rome and strong Catholic backlash to the Slavs.

AFAIK the slavs settled en masse on the balkans a few decades later so if Mohamed is born on the Balkans in 570 than he likely wont be a slav.
