A 20th Century Lincoln

The 926 Republican delegates to the Republican convention in Philadelphia renominated William McKinley by acclamation. Thomas Platt, the "boss" of the New York State Republican Party, did not like Theodore Roosevelt, New York's popular governor, even though he was a fellow Republican. Roosevelt's efforts to reform New York politics - including Republican politics - led Platt and other state GOP leaders to pressure President McKinley to accept Roosevelt as his new Vice-Presidential candidate, thus filling the spot left open when Vice President Garret A. Hobart died in 1899. Although Roosevelt was reluctant to accept the vice-presidency, which he regarded as a relatively trivial and powerless office, his great popularity among most Republican delegates led McKinley to pick him as his new running mate. Ironically, Roosevelt would be elevated to the Presidency in September 1901 when McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo, New York.

Let's say Platt decides to go against Teddy's nomination for the Vice President and Instead throws his political clout to former Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln instead. Todd reluanctly accepts the nomination, and the McKinley/Lincoln ticket goes on to win the 1900 more or less on OTL's terms.

Mckinley is inturned assasinated in 1901, and Lincoln becomes the 26th President of the United States. What does his presidency look like? Does he choose Teddy for his Vice President in the 1904 election? What are some other potential butterflies of having a Lincoln return to the White House...Please Discuss

Lincoln would not have accepted nomination.

I don't see why not...Although he did say that " a certain fatality about the presidential function when I am present." with him eerily being at both Harrison and McKinley's assasination IOTL. But he did seem to like the executive role as he was President of the Pullman Company, so If McKinley is able to coherse him into doing it, Id think hed take it.

However, him being the President of the Pullman Company also shows that as a President Todd may be more likely to not push the anti-trust laws that Teddy did IOTL. He was also an amateur astronmer and could possibly pump money into an expansion of Rocketry programs.
