Aécio Neves won in 2014

Being Portuguese, I feel very sad at the events in our brother country, Brazil. I wonder: What would Brazil look like today if Aécio Neves had won in 2014? It was definitely possible, the election was very close.

Senator Neves is currently on trial as one of the major politicians involved in Lava Jato (Car Wash) Scandal, the biggest corruption scandal in Brazilian history. So, I can imagine Neves be impeached and removed as Rousseff in favor of his Vice-President Aloysio Nunes. Nunes seems a pretty good moderate politician so maybe he avoids the disastrous pro-corporation pro-austerity economic policies that Michel Temer enacted after the "coup" against Rousseff. Without corruption charges (as for Temer), Nunes can run in 2018 and take a 15-20% of vote that the polls assigned to Temer at the beginning of his Presidency. However Rouseff runs again and, with less social anger in the air, is able to win against Nunes himself and Bolsonaro.

I'm aware of the Neves trial. However I doubt, that, he would have been impeached if president because he would have better articulation to calm down the Congress, than Dilma.

In Brazil, the President can only be investigated for crimes committed during the mandate.

First, Aécio Neves is way smarter and a better politician than Dilma Rousseff, the latter allowed the Car Wash operation to grow up and ironically put half her party (including the ex-President and her political patron Lula) and turning the Brazilian population against the PT, her political incompetency, the decline of the PT's influence and popularity (started in 2013 and shown by the tight victory in 2014) caused her Impeachment and the rise of Temer.

Neves is different, he is a mafia politician that could order the murder of a close family member to keep his corruption Empire. He would never allow Sergio Moro and the Police to get their power and influence to investigate his associates, corruption would remain covered, the PT would keep a large influence as the Car Wash operation and Dilma's impeachment would never cut their popularity. And the 2018 elections would continue with the classical PSDB-PT "rivalry" with either Lula or Rousseff taking the ticket against another term of Neves.

And even if his corruption scandals were discovered, he would never fall. He knew how to do politics, he knew how to keep control and loyalty of the Congress, probably he would not win a second term and the PT would be back in power.
