9/11 Attacks in Tehran

Instead of attacking the great Satan ,Al Qaeda attacks The Shia heretics in Tehran. What would the reaction be ,Would the U.S. fund Al Qaeda if there was an invastion

Unlikely with Bin Laden in charge - he was always focused Westward; he'd use his energy towards attacking the West (as he did in OTL).

No, the U.S. doesn't even utilize the Jundallah OTL, which is a Baluchi Sunni militant group. They'd just stand and watch the mullahs have to deal with another headache.

well...

Ouch, but what would the immediate driving force behind the attacks be? Would Iran blow up civilians by accident in Afghanistan and then refuse to acknowledge that it happened? Because that's what the US did to piss off Bin Laden AFAIK. If the Iranians did something that made Al Qaeda attack them, then yeah. Would the US fund them? Maybe. Until Tim Osman(Bin Ladens code name that the CIA knew him by during the Soviet war in Afghanistan) does something to the US itself that actually catches the public's attention and outrage, I think they would continue to look the other way. After all, Osama had very rich family members who dealt in business all over the world. I think that would help him fund it plenty, but hey, a few billion dollars more is all the better:D. Though 'fun' fact... While 9/11 was happening, Vice President Dick Cheney was meeting with one of Bin Laden's brothers to secure a business deal...

Side Note: This post was meant in a serious fashion even if it seemed like I was a little not being serious, which I do to keep the mood from sinking too low. I apologize if it caused offense to anyone, that was not my intention if it does.

Bin Laden's animosity was American troops in Saudi Arabia. He was a fundamentalist from the beginning who had critical views of America like many Third World citizens, but that's what his major grievance was.

He thought that Saudi Arabia should have used him to wage jihad against Saddam, not America.

Huge butterflies.

Iran might invade Afghanistan to supplant the already hostile Taliban.

Pakistan may in turn invade to stop their secretive ally from capitulating, probably growing into an all out sectarian war with the western nations sitting back eating popcorn.

The question "why?" is an obvious one but let's assume it happens - Iran does something specific to piss off Al-Qaeda:

As GH says, Iran would likely to go war over it and it'd go extremely sectarian. I think the West would be aghast at the attack (thousands dead) and we'd still get airline security theatre, probably still get talk about standing against terrorism. The West isn't going to start buddying up to Iran though. Governments would be quietly glad Al-Qaeda and the Taliban are being sorted by someone else.

Then the sectarian conflicts spread and then we have to care. Too many nations in the region could be hit; it may even spread to Western soil, if it gets really bad.
