88's everywhere

after france in 1940 rommel sent hitler a special illustrated version of the 7th panzer divisions war diary

lets say he is impressed by rendeitions of 88's knocking out matilda tanks and angered by the 37mm paks bouncing off

he calls a conference with von thoma and rommel to solicit their opinions since they both have experiance using the 88 in the ground role

based on their input he orders a low profile 88 pak to be produced and an experimental battalion mounted on half tracks

the low profile mount has solid success in greece and he orders the low profile 88 to replace all smaller anti tank guns

this process is 40 percent complete by the launch of barbarossa

do we think this could change the outcome?

Germany fights a better defensive war but probably a worse offensive one seeing as all that anti tank gun production will probably effect tank production.

Greater levels of Rommel-wankage on internet forums?

Unlikely. The 88mm gun is very heavy. An AT-version would be lighter than the AA-gun, but according to the german wiki it still weighs 3,6 metric tons.
Giving a higher priortiy to the 5cm PaK 38 or the 75mm Pak40 would be more likely and reasonable.

If its done anyway it would be a huge waste or resources. Why build a 3,6 ton gun if an 830 kilo gun can do the job just as well, or rather better given the lighter guns´s better mobility?

i didnt say it would be the most logical.. i never considered hitler a logical kinda guy but he always liked bigger. i dont think it would be too much of a production issue since the germans where making the 88s anyway its just a questions of putting it on a low profile mount which is lighter, less of a target, and more manueverable

if 37mm was cut and its resources committed to making low profile mounts its within their economic capacity and imo it would enjoy good success since the pak companies in each regiment where motorized
