49ers win 7 of 8 Super Bowls (1988-1995)

POD - Herschell Walker drafted in the middle rounds by the Dolphins. He goes on to some very good years as a Wilbert Montgomery-type back for the Dolphins.

The trade between Dallas and Minnesota therefore, can't happen, so the Cowboys can't get the depth they need to become a great Super Bowl team; they get close, but somethign stands in their way, just as they stand in the Vikings' way.

1990: After the 2 Super Bowls of OTL (and an NFL best record in 1987), the 49ers have a few different players, thanks to different draft positioning. Their defense is thus barely able to hold off the Giants, 13-12, even after Roger Craig's fumble.

Minnesota chooses Emmitt Smith in the NFL Draft.

Super Bowl XXV: Scott Norwood misses a potential game-tying field gorl, and the 49ers win 27-24 for their 3rd straight Super Bowl. Steve Young is the hero, as he becomes the first QB to run for 100 years and pass for 200 in a Super Bowl; some speculate the injured Joe Montana may not have been able to win the game. His injury the next year means the 49ers lose out to the Redskins, who beat the Bills in the Super Bowl.

1992: Charles Haley has to decide between the 3-time champs and good Dallas and Minnesota teams as a free agent. However, the Vikings can't afford to pay him as much, and the Cowboys are still struggling, with Troy Aikman being sacked repeatedly. He chooses to re-sign witht he Cowboys.

The 49ers beat the Bills 59-7, in Super Bowl XXVII. Already, there are murmurrings about how the 49ers are "buying Super Bowls" even with free agency just starting.

1993: The 49ers almost lose to the Vikings in Minnesota, as they struggle to a 10-6 mark while the Vikings are 11-5, but pull it out. Emmitt Smith is still the NFL's MVP for them, though.

Their win over the Bills is a blowout, but not nearly as bad as the last one.

1994: The 49ers win their 3rd straight Super Bowl, this time 49-26 over the Chargers (and it isn't even that close), as they lay claim to the title of greatest NFL team of all time in the NFL's 7th anniversary. They signed Deion Sanders, and the coaching carousel in Dallas after they team has failed to win becomes to crazy Deion Sanders decides after this season he'll stick with them.

1995: The 49ers win yet another Super Bowl, though the Packers upset the Cowboys in the playoffs and almost beat the 49ers. San Fracisco wins the 30th Super Bowl by a couple touchdowns over Pittsburgh.
The Packers will wint he Super Bowl the next year before losing to Denver.

1998: Emmitt Smith finally gets his World Series ring as the Vikings squeak past Denver.

So, how does the 49ers' incredible dynasty affect the NFL? Do ratings go down a lot for the NFL, with their run of 7 Super Bowls in 8 years? Granted, as I look as it, a couple of those years it might be close; maybe the Super Bowls wouldn't all be blowouts. But, still, any combination of someone else drafted Walker and a few other little things could have caused it to happen.

I'm not that familiar with the details, but wasn't there a change to the salary cap instituted in 1993, which would have made it harder for the 49ers to keep resigning their stars?

I think football would remain as popular. Some people would choose to root against the 49ers, just because of their success, and others would support "America's Team." I remember the 49ers as always having a good reputation (i.e. no criminal behavior from its athletes).

First off, World Series rings are given out in Baseball. In the NFL they are called Superbowl rings.

Second, the Walker trade not happening would Butterfly away the fluke injury that cost Joe Montana two years of his career.

Third, after Montana was traded to the Chiefs, the Chiefs and 49ers played once with Montana and Young as the starters. The Chiefs won by a touchdown. The Chiefs were not as good as the 49ers on paper. Therefore, Montana was better than Young, even at 37, just as Montana was greater than Elway even at 38. There will never be another Montana. He had "It".

Montana

Well, the Chiefs were lucky to get the Niners that year at the beginning of the season. What if they play in Week 13? The Chiefs would have been destroyed. Montana was a good QB, but he is overrated for the credit that he gets. People try to make a demigod out of him, and seem to give him all the credit for the Niners Super Bowl success. I always thought that was ignorant.

Joe Montana won four rings with the Niners surrounded by talent such as Roger Craig, Jerry Rice, Dwight Clark, etc.

In KC he made it to a conference championship game surrounded by Derrick Thomas and nothing else. He was not a demigod. He was a man. He always had a weak arm, and his knees went when he was 34, robbing him of his scrambling ability. What set him apart was his mind. He could read faster than anyone else. He never panicked. As a 37 year old man with nothing to prove he took hits that would have crippled a man ten years younger. He had the stats. 40551 yards. 273 tds. 8 Pro bowls. He also had what you can never measure: Heart. No matter what the score was, he never stopped believing he could still win. I will defend him to the death. If I needed one player to build a team around, it would be Fran Tarkenton. If I needed one play it would be Joe Montana.
