40 BC: Herod vs the Parthians

In the year 40 BC, the Parthians invaded from the north and took Jerusalem, while Herod (then a Governor, nor a King) took his family and fled south.

What if Herod had chosen to stay and fight the Parthians, to keep them out of the Holy City of Jerusalem?

if he's successful in keeping the Parthians out, would this improve his relations with the people of Judea?...or might, after fending off the Parthians, he arrange to become a client king in their orbit? (sort of like how, in OTL, he said to Octavius "I was completely loyal to Antony, even when his fortunes were poor; now I will be completely loyal to you")

thoughts?
