In the final battle of the civil war, there were rumors that imperial mexican forces crossed the Rio Grande, but didn't get involved in the battle. There is also rumors that mexican forces fired at us from the other side of the Rio Grande. But what if the rumors weren't true. What if it was proven shortly after the battle that mexico had fired on our troops. Would we go to war? Who would win? And why?

Nothing would have happened. The US government at that time would not have wanted to get involved in another war if they did not have too. You would have plenty of unhappy troops if you got involved in one war after having ended a civil war. Also, think of the extra expense. All money was needed to rebuild the US.
Mexico had troubles of their own in dealing with the French at the time. Somehow I doubt either they or the US would be looking to get into another war so soon.
Are we talking about the same Union here? The Union that, as soon as Appomatox Courthouse was signed, started to organize the largest battle-hardened army on both continents to send to Mexico to kick the French out? Because that was the intention and action, except France left first.

I checked and you are right. Really did not think the US got directly involved since the Mexicans did all the fighting. Knew about the US supplies to Mexico but not that US naval blockade. Its not mentioned much.
Well if you have the right POD then a war could occur. A lesser known fact is that Maximilian offered the position of Prime Minister to Benito Juarez. Now some can argue this was a trick, or unlikely to occur but given Maximilian's actions during his reign I believe he was serious in the offer. So if Juarez decided to try and work with the government it may have ended the rebel faction, and string of killings that followed the regime change.
So if you have a somewhat unified Mexico, with a little trouble but the conservative, and liberal factions in some form of compromise Mexico may stay a French colony for a few years.
Now with this POD in mind one has to wonder what the US would do. On the one hand France will leave, yet on the other a Monarchy that forced itself into power is in North America. I can see any number of Presidents mad at a monarchy sneaking into the area. So America says get out, Maximilian says no, and Juarez even says no given the land reforms passing, and much getting down while giving lipservice to the landed elites, and at the same time seing the issue of a monarch a Mexican problem.
So the war occurs in 1867-1869 and ends as everyone expects, but I could see Emperor in exile, and maybe even looked at fondly in the decades to come. Jaurez as the great compromiser, who found that nice niche to get reforms done, but without angering the wealthy.

It wouldn't be much of an invasion, just the US landing a small dingy of marines there. Probally nothing.
Post ACW it could be interesting.
Pre or during then France woudl win easily but after the US is in a better position and France in a worse...
Actually the Union built several Monitor type ironclads. The Monitor was just a prototype really.
