28 Days Later outbreak timeline - Death of a Nation

Eastern European Theatre
  • By the end of March, Western Europe was a desolate wasteland, with a few exceptions in Switzerland, Ireland, the Netherlands and the Iberian penisula. The Rage ravaged Eastern Europe as April progressed. Warsaw was described as one Polish journalist as "Having not seen such devastation and panic since the Warsaw Uprising of 1944"

Polands government would relocate to Lodz as Warsaw fell, then flee to Ukraine as the whole country collapsed into civil unrest. A military government would take the resigns of power and try and hold the uninfected redoubts scattered across Poland together, though with limited sucess. The Baltic states would suffer a similar fate during April.

The former Yugoslav countries struggles to cope with an influx of refugees coming across the Adriatic sea from Italy, as well having to death with renewed ethnic tensions between Serbis, Croats and Albanians.

As Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia collapsed under giant waves of refugees from Austria, Hungary and Italy, as well as internal strife, riots and panic broke out in Romania and Bulgaria, with both nations realising that containment of the virus was a lost cause. Millions of Romanian refugees would try and flee across Moldova and Ukraine towards the safety of Russia, whilst Bulgarians streamed into Turkey and Greece.

The Greek army initially held a defensive line along the entire border, and even supported by remants of the Bulgarian army, was still to overstretched to hold back the infection sweeping through the Balkans.

A controvertial decision was taken to relocated the government and the majority of the armed forces behind the Corinth Canal. In order for Greece to survive, Athens, the ancient capital, had to be abandoned.

Whilst the decision to abandon over half the country would be controvertial for decades to come, it saved millions of Greeks from infection. Greece was one of the few European nations to survive the epidemic intact, albeit having lost over half their territory.

The fall of northern Greece led to the Turkish government evacuating the entire population of Istanbul across the Bosphorus river into Asia minor, and destroyed the bridges behind them, cutting off the Middle East from Europe, at least for the time being. In the weeks that would follow, chaos would plague Turkey as several million refugees from Istanbul, and millions more from Bulgaria and Greece settled in the country. The strain on resourses led to riots and protests, culmintating in a violent military coup on 2 May, the Generals promising to restore order and protect the country. A counter coup two days later followed by a popular civilian uprising against the counter coup would ensure chaos in Turkey for months to come.

The first cases of rage were reported in towns along the Ukrainian western border in Moldova on 5 May, and the next day, outbreaks struck south west Belarus. A small number of asymptomatic carriers (less than 0.1% of those who come into contact with infected and survive) would lead to the virus spreading behind defence lines in eastern Poland and Belarus

In Moscow, President Vladimir Putin would look out the windows of his office in the Kremlin at a military parade in the square, as they prepared to go to the new defensive line that would stretch from St Petersburg to Smolensk to Rostov. Hundreds of thousands of heavily armed soldiers, thousands of tanks and APC's and several hundred helicopters, as well as millions of land mines and many thousands of miles of barbed wire cut across Russia's western areas. Russia was about to face the infection head on.

Of course, if all those defences didnt work, there was also another option to fall back on...around 12,000 of these options patiently waited in underground silos and submarines.

    Ukraine falls
  • Ukraine was in a state of societal collapse by the middle of May. Kiev fell into chaos and civil unrest as electricity, water and gas supplies cut off. Cummunications soon went down between the major cities of the Ukraine as infection spread. Seeing that the situation was hopeless, the remnants of the armed forces fell back to the Crimea peninsula and formed a safe zone, with the capital being relocated to Sevastapol. The Russian government funelled thousands of weapons into Eastern Ukraine and Belarus in an effort to slow the spread of infection and buy time for Russia's defences to reach their full strength.

Several hundred Russian soldiers were permitted by the Ukrainian govenment to participate in the defence of the Crimea, owing to its large Russian population, as well as the base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

At 5:47 AM 26 May, Vladimir Putin was woken by one of his Security Advisors, who simply told him "Its reached Russia."

The troops policing the border with Ukraine had all been withdrawn days earlier to the main defensive lives further east, and in their place many thousands of landmines had been laid. They were not enough, and by the time military satellites saw border being breached, the infected had reached the small border town of Maximov. The town was overrun without a shot being fired, as no police were present, nor were there any soldiers.

Taganrog was the first large Russian town the infected would menace, a town that was hurriedly being evacuated, with the population being taken to refugee camps behind the Kvashnin Line, named after the Army chief of staff who devised it.

The line ran along the M4 road from Rostov on Don in the far south up to Voronezh, then up to Moscow and finally along to St Petersburg. It was hoped that by evacuating most of the population behind this line, the infection would die out in the border areas quickly. A mistake that the British government had made 1 year previous, that had allowed Glasgow to fall and subsequently Scotland. The threat of animals as carriers had not been heeded.

Four weeks after Ukraine fell and the infection had crossed into Russia, most of the infected were starving, and the plan seemed to be working miraculously. Some even dared to tempt fate and say the epidemic was over, with only a few thousand dead in Russia.

    Russia holds the line
  • Although there were a very small number of outbreaks in Russia, all were ultimately cleared up quickly with a strong military response, the infected towns on the Ukrainian border were sealed off with mines and barbed wire and pounded with aircraft and artillery and until nothing was left. The detonation of nuclear weapons in the overrun Ukrainian cities of Donetsk and Lugansk also thinned the remaining infecteds numbers.

The Russian Federation had been spared the chaos that Europe had witnessed for the most part.

By the end of May 2003, George W Bush informed the members of his cabinet that a ground invasion of Iraq would not go ahead, although more subtle means to dealing with Saddams weapons of mass destruction - should they be found to exist - should be brought into play.

In both Canada and Australia, countries will strong links to the UK and hosting fairly large refugee populations, many of these people were reluctantly accepting that they would never return home, that the motherland was a lost cause. Many took on Australian and Canadian citizenship and integrated with their hosts.

Africa, as always was a mess. But now it looked like their was no hope for the continent, with all aid from Europe having dried up, and the worlds attention and resources focused on infection ravage Europe, starvation and malnutrition became far more prevalant than OTL, and rebel movements in many countries gained more support from the public in their countries, who blamed their corrupt governments for their suffering. Already ongoing civil wars in Liberia , Sierra Leone and Congo grew worse and worse, spilling into neiggbouring countries and leaving many thousands dead or missing.

In Libya, the regime of Muammar al-Gaddafi was beginning to struggle economically with the end of all oil trade between Libya and Europe, although this was somewhat compensated by increased selling of oil to North America. The Libyan economy struggled even worse as Italian refugee's drained resources, and attacks on refugee camps near Tripoli increased.

The public become more angry and bold as the price of food and fuel began to soar, even baby foruma was becoming expensive. A crowd of several hundred began to protest over the untennable cost of living in the city of Derna in eastern Libya, followed soon after by the second largest city of Benghazi.

Perhaps things would have turned out differently had Gaddafi not ordered his army to put down the protests. As such, he did give the order, and 200 people were shot dead in the streets of Benghazi between 1 and 2 June.

After the Benghazi Massacre, many horrified soldiers refused orders to continue firing on protesters, and defected to the side of the opposition, who were still protesting, no longer calling for lower prices, but rather "The people want to topple the regime".

Civil War broke out as forces loyal to Gaddafi tried to storm into the eastern Cyrenecia province, under rebel control within a few days of the uprisings start.

Gaddafi's army began shelling Benghazi after seizing rebel controlled oil ports in Brega and Ras Lanuf, and taking the city of Ajdabiya. By 14 July, after six weeks of civil war, Gaddafi had seized back control of the east, and was mopping up resistance in the Nafusa Mountains in the rest, engaging in what some would have considered ethnic clensing on berber tribes. (Without NATO intervention, the rebellion was pretty much doomed).

Resistance would continue in the form of geurilla warfare for years to come, Gaddafi would eventually be assassinated in a bomb explosion three years later, and a military junta would take power and lead to a gradual roadmap to western style democracy.

In Asia, entire economies had collapsed, and both China and Japan were struggling to keep their currencies from entirely going into free fall. Things would eventually stabilse on the economic front two years or so after the infection had been unable to spread out of Europe.

Europe itself was now a povert stricken ruin. Spain and Portugal had survived intact, as had Switzerland and the Scandiavian countires (except Denmark). The southern tip Greece and the the Medeteranian islands all made it through. But they suffered from severe poverty, economic ruin, rampant disease and resourse drain due to the massive influx of refugees.

Some what ironically was the state of the former United Kingdom, which was actually improving, the resettlement areas set up American led NATO forces before the Europe outbreak had manage to establish contact with eachother and form a loose federation of communities that swere dotted around England, Scotland and Wales. My early 2006, the Federation of Great Britain was proclaimed in St Andrews, Scotland, which included St Andews, the most affluent of the resettled areas, as well as the Isle of Wight, Dover, Folkstone, Portsmouth, Fort William and Angelsey. Smaller villages near these towns were later cleared of bodies and wreckage and also resettled, and rudimentary phone lines and power lines were set up or reconnected, allowing communication between the citizens of the British Federation of some 30,000 estimated people. The Federation was run by a joint civilian and military council upon its proclamation, with plans for elections in 2008.

Perhaps the most well off country in Europe was the Republic of Ireland, owing to its geography no infected reached the country, and overland refugee flows were not a problem. Of course, the economic climate was hardly great, and over 60,000 UK refugees and 5,000 French refugees, were clustered in camps around Dublin, but the country was getting by fairly well.

By 2012, most of the European continent remained a desolate wasteland, nobody wanted to venture into the ruins, except a few enterprising individuals in search of loots, or sometimes military recon teams from survivor countries. Russia had moved its army into the mostly abandoned former Baltic states and Belarus to "protect the survivors from roaming bands of armed gangs that are preying on the people". The infection has died years earlier, so all that was left to do was clean up. And Vladimir Putin was there to oversee it. Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine...all once more under the control of Moscow.

Scientists at the Centres for Disease Control in Atlanta finally made a breakthrough on 1 August 2012, creating a succesful vaccine to prevent infection. It was too little too late many observers pointed out, the infection had burned itself out many years earlier, the only surviving samples of it remained in secure government labs.

Over all, the Rage Virus and the chaos that came with it lead to the death of over 630 million people. Many more that physically survived were so emotionally scarred that they may as well have been dead.

The tale of Rage is one that will undoubtebly live on for millenia, something that historians a thousand years from now will still talk about in awe.

The question many people want answered...could it ever come back ?

November Oscar "Revived 9441, be advised all ambulances are currently attending incidents. No available ambulance support

Any updates appreciated."

November Oscar "November Oscar to 5457. Ive received unconfirmed reports of some kind of viral outbreak being behind the riots. Advice from the Chief Inspector is to try and keep your distance from the rioters and avoid their blood getting on you. We're not sure that is how its spread but specialists are being brought in to run tests."

PC Gates "Understood November Oscar. This is getting out of hand. We need bloody back up now ! This is going on paper, i want to make a formal complaint. We cant possibly operate under these circumstances its completely unacceptable. Over"

November Oscar "Ill make a note of your complaint. There's nothing i can do though, we're stretched beyond our capacity here, as is the ambulance and fire services. No

    ---------------------

I cant make it back to my car, too many of these drugged up fuckers blocking the way. Im hiding behind a shed in someones back garden on Chesterton Road. Any held would be appreciated. Over."

November Oscar "Stay where you are and keep out of sight. Ill try and get a car over to you as soon as one is available. Over."

PC Henderson "Ok, hurry up. These people are all over the street. You might want to think about evacuating some areas. A lot of innocent people are being attacked."

November Oscar "Understood 4815, you hang in there, ill try get help to you soon. Over."

    -----------------------

PC Franklin "6045 to November Oscar, have orders been given for officers to return home early ? Over."

November Oscar "Negative, 6045, why do you ask ?"

PC Franklin "I'm hearing numerous reports of our guys leaving their posts and going home to protect their families. We cant cope with this drain in manpower, make sure the Chief Inspector is aware of this. Over."

November Oscar "All received 6045, ill pass it on to him, over."

    --------------------------

November Oscar "Inspector Morris, receiving ?"

    Inspector Morris "Receiving"

November Oscar "I'm been informed that a number of officers have left their posts to be with their families. Its becoming an issue with manpower, over."

Inspector Morris "Im well aware of that. Theres nothing that can be done at this time, ive cancelled all leave , but under these circumstances theres nothing i
can do if people go home or dont show up for work. I'm going to put out a message to all units telling them anyone caught leaving their post to return home early will
face disciplinary action. Right now im just hoping we get this outside back up soon, im seeing mounting casualty reports here. We cant sustain these losses if they continue at this pace. Also, be advised we are diverting all injured over to Addenbrookes Hospital as there are currently ongoing incidents at all other hospitals
    in the area."

    "All received sir, over."

    --------------------

PC Bretton "1134 to November Oscar, requesting assistance for directing traffic on the M11. Got a bit of gridlock developing here, looks like people are trying
    to leave the city, over."

November Oscar "Received. Negative on the assistance, you will have to manage on your own for now. Most our units are engaged or off the grid. Its getting out of hand
in the city centre. Dozens, maybe hundreds of people dead."

PC Bretton "Understood, but we have a huge amount of traffic here. At the very least get some traffic wardens or something. It looks like half of Cambridge has decided
to get the hell out of here. I'm tempted to do the same myself. Just get me some support ASAP. Over."

"All recieved 1134, just do your best and direct traffic away from any place where incidents are being reported. Over."

    ----------------------

PC Simmons "9101 to November Oscar, are you receiving me, over ?"

November Oscar "Receiving 9101, go ahead."

PC Simmons "There's an RTA on Colney Lane, a car and an ambulance collided head on. The driver of the car is dead, two paramedics in the ambulance are in bad shape.
Need an ambulance up here as soon as possible. On top of that there's a fire in one of the nearby streets. I can smell smoke and see flames, not sure of the cause.
    Over."

November Oscar "Ill try and get the fire brigade over to you as soon as anything is available, but the fire station on Colney Lane is under attack,
so i cant guarantee any fire brigade turn out for a while. On top of that, Ive lost contact with the ambulance station on Hemmingford Road, nobody is answering my calls.
I dont know when you will receive any ambulance or fire brigade turn out, over."

PC Simmons "These guys will die if i dont get help here soon !"

November Oscar "It may be best if you drive them to Addenbrookes hospital yourself. As long as they dont have serious head or spine injuries. Ive no idea when i can get you
    an ambulance over there. Over"

PC Simmons "Recieved. Ill try and get them out and drive them over. This is a fucking joke, bloody cut backs are to blame i tell you. Over"

    November Oscar "Roger, understood."

    ---------------

November Oscar "This is November Oscar, any available units can you make your way to a disturbance at a property at 19 Cambridge Street. Reports that a family are

    -------------------

Chief Inspector Anderson "November Oscar from four-three, receiving ?"

    November Oscar "Go ahead sir."

Chief Inspector Anderson "I need you to get a message out to local radio stations or really anybody who will listen since i cant get through to anybody from the public relations department, theyre not answering their phone. Over."

November Oscar "Received, ill make a few calls, what do you want me to relay Chief Inspector ?"

Chief Inspector Anderson "There is an ongoing, violent civil unrest in central Cambridge, particularly around the University, the train station and the town centre. Members of the public should avoid the area at costs and those already living in the vicinity of the riots are urged to remain behind locked doors."

November Oscar "All received sir, give me a few minutes and ill get back to you. Over."

November Oscar "Four-three from November Oscar, receiving ?"

Chief Inspector Anderson "Did you get the message out ?"

November Oscar "Yes sir, I called the BBC and they'll put out a special bulletin over the news shortly. Over."

Chief Inspector Anderson "Good job Sally, now listen carefully, this situation, whatever it is, it is now out of our control. I've revived word that other police forces that were on their way to provide assistance to us have been ordered to turn back, and that the army is about to close the main roads into Cambridge. Dont expect any
military assistance anytime soon. By the looks of things theyre locking Cambridge down under quarantine. Ive had calls from the Department of Health and the Home Office demanding more information on whats going on, it looks like it may be some kind of disease or something."

November Oscar "Oh god...sir, what can we do ? Is there anything ? I'm losing contact with more officers with every passing minute. Over."

Chief Inspector Anderson "Its a cluster fuck...I think maybe thousands of people are dead, no way to really tell though. There isnt really anything we can do now. We stood our ground and did our best for the people of Cambridge, but we cant sustain these casualties any longer. Its all fucked. I'm ordering all remaining officers to head over to Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge Airport, Homerton College and Huntington Police HQ and to hold their ground at these locations. Sally, i understand if you want to leave your post. Nobody will hold it against you, a lot of others have already gone to be with their families. Theres no point ordering people to stay on and be killed. I'm offically giving you permition to return to your family. Over"

November Oscar "Sir....i cant just up and leave, people are depending on me...what about..."

Chief Inspector Anderson "Sally, i admire your determination and bravery, i really do, but this is a lost cause now. We will hold out as long as we can, but i want you
to go home to your husband and daughter ok ?"

November Oscar "Received sir, thank you. I just hope i can make it there safely I have my car, but still...."

Chief Inspector Anderson "Go and be with your family Sally, you wont be safe there much longer anyway. Most of the officers at your station are already gone anyway,
you might be the only person left there for all i know. Goodluck Sally.

November Oscar "Thank you again, good luck to you too, Over and out."

    -----------------------------------
November Oscar "All units from November Oscar, Parkside police station
radio post is shutting down effective immediately. Please relay any urgent calls over to Police HQ in Huntingdon. Stay safe. Over."

    Refugee Crisis Looms
  • A small update just because it's Christmas and I'm feeling generous .
    ...

As Cambridge was rapidly overrun with infection, tens of thousands were forced to flee for their lives. Likewise thousands of people from Cambridge and other parts of East Anglia who commuted to London or other cities were unable to return home. The responsibility for these internally displaced persons fell upon the local councils who were being supported by the Red Cross, Salvation Army and other charities and volunteer groups.

With schools across most of South and Central England being closed during the first few days , many of these buildings found themselves being turned into temporary accommodation or even makeshift Red Cross hospitals to support the struggling NHS hospitals being overwhelmed by the volumes of injured. A number of trains would also be commandeered as hospitals to quickly ferry the injured away from danger.

Within ten days of the outbreak beginning, London had taken in some 75,000 refugees fleeing south from the chaos. Hotels, bed and breakfasts along with school gym halls and churches would help with accomodation. In many cases people opened their doors to complete strangers if they had a spare room. The other problem othan accommodation was how to feed these people. All imports and exports to and from the United Kingdom had ceased, therefor only domestically produced goods could be used to feed the people of Britain. The problem with that was that whilst Britain was at least 60% self sufficient with its food stocks, the transport and logistics infrastructure on the island of Great Britain was collapsing. Many roads were jammed with cars trying to flee or were closed after the infection overrun towns the roads passed through. The national fuel reserves were fast drying up meaning lorries were struggling to fill up on fuel to transport food and medicine where it was needed most. Indeed, by the time the order to evacuate London was given, the north of the country was almost entirely cut off from the south. Famine was now a certainty in the United Kingdom.

Despite the struggles with feeding and housing refugees, both the central government and local authorities would rise to the challenge, though sadly they would miss the mark. The Millennium Dome. Built to celebrate in coming of the new Millennium and came at the cost of nearly £1 billion. No longer was it being used in celebration. It was now one of the worlds largest refugee camps and was at almost three times its capacity. The running water and sewage systems no longer functioned. Chemical toilets had been brought in by Greenwich Council but queues up to two hours long meant people would simply go and do their business in a corner.

Disease was rampant. Every day soldiers in full NBC gear came in with empty body bags and left with full body bags. The Metropolitan Police no longer patrolled the Dome. They were busy keeping the streets safe. Crime was rampant inside. There had been a dozen murders in the space of a week and nobody had bothered to count the rapes.

A riot would erupt at the Millennium Dome IDP camp on 13 May when it was revealed that the bodies that were being taken away from the camp by the army were being cremated in power stations to help keep the lights on the city. A fire erupted that spread through the packed arena killing nearly a thousand people. By the time already stretched emergency services arrived it was too late to help many of the people.

By the second week of the outbreak, there was close to six million people displaced within British borders, and over half a million were attempting to reach France. The Eurostar continued non stop right up until the moment the French government ordered the Channel Tunnel sealed. Over 200,000 people would make it through the Chunnel before the closure. A further 500,000 would flee by air before the no fly zone was enforced. Tens of thousands more would flee over the water in seacraft ranging from ferries to houseboats and even handmade rafts.

France, Ireland, Spain and Belgium would take in the majority of British refugee's, though smaller numbers would also settle further afield. Over 10,000 would settle in the United States for example and a further 14,000 in Australia. The Royal Australian Air Force would use its own aircraft to help in the evacuations.

By the time Great Britain was officially quarantined on 19 May, over 1 million British citizens had successfully fled the doomed island for safer shores.
